Portugal - Algarve: 📍Sagres 🇵🇹🪨 - 25-10-22 ‘Also known as the edge/end of the world…’ 🌍 Our second stop, Sagres. The most Southwestern part of Europe, hence known as ‘The End Of The World’. A nice scenic drive down to the coast from Lagos. Upon arriving, parking 🅿️ is ample and FREE! You’re welcomed by the the ‘Fortaleza De Sagres’🛕 (Sagres Fortress). Its €3 per person to go beyond the fortress but 100% worth it. We weren’t sure what would be in ‘Sagres’ or if anybody else bothers visiting, how wrong we were!!! It turns out they do coach tours to the coast. 👌🏽 We spent almost 2 hours wondering the coastline, also embarking on to ‘Cape St. Vincent’ to see the ‘Lighthouse of Cabo De São Vicente’, only 10 minutes from the Fort. A beautiful sight, but if you do go make sure it’s not wrapped in scaffolding. 🙄 A great spot, definitely worth a visit if you’re in the Algarve. 🇵🇹 - Picture 3 is a photo of just one of the many fisherman that climb over the coastal wall and risk their lives to catch their fish for the day or for their livelihood. - Picture 6. Not only did this give me a great climbing 🧗🏽♂️ spot but it is also a circular structure where at the centre of it has a hole right down to sea level and you hear the thrashing of the waves upon the rocks. (A scary experience). To envision the depth of the hole, zoom into picture 8, it’ll give you an idea of the depth of the rock, to the sea level. 😱

You can enter (for free) the forecourt of the lighthouse. But you cannot enter the actual lighthouse. However the lighthouse completely occupies the tip of Cabo de Sao Vicente. So technically you cannot say you have been at the southwesternmost point of the continent. Even without being picky, the walls of the forecourt block some of the views out to the cliff. The lighthouse forecourt has a bar, toilets (for €0.70) and a couple of gift shops with the usual touristic trinkets. Actually the street stalls and food truck on the road near the car park are much more interesting both for the food and the items on sale. Right at the entrance there are more ancient buildings and walls that look clearly like remains of an ancient fortress. However the ancient bastion is closed and there is no historical information signs around. So, although the lighthouse surely helps sailors, it is totally useless for tourists, actually blocking them from seeing the actual cape point. However you will enjoy wonderful views to the cliffs and ocean by wandering on the surrounding area as close as safely possible to the cliff edges. I literally spent hours walking around. Bear in mind that the terrain is mostly barren pointy rock and there are often strong cool/cold wings. Therefore, bring sturdy shoes (hiking boots recommended), a windbreaker or a jacket (even in the hot season) and a great dose of balance and attention to your steps.

Fabo do Cabo de Sao Vincente is an absolutely stunning destination that everyone visiting Portugal should experience. We visited on a Monday around 3 PM, and unfortunately, the lighthouse access was closed, but the surrounding scenery more than made up for it. The cliffs are breathtakingly high, with waves crashing against the rocks below, turning the water a mesmerizing milky white. It’s incredible to stand there and take in the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean—the deep blue waters to the right are a striking reminder that the next landmass is America. To the left, you can see the beautiful coastline of Portugal stretching out into the distance. This was my second visit, and it’s as awe-inspiring as ever. Whether it’s your first time or a return trip, Fabo do Cabo de Sao Vincente is a must-see for its sheer natural beauty and sense of wonder. Highly recommended!

Quite literally the end of the world. It was very beautiful and the atmosphere is very different. Go there and you will feel it. Difficult to explain, but it feels.. Sacred. One thing which makes this place special is that you can look to the sea and see nothing. Literally endless water and nothingness as in fact, the other end is Virginia, USA! Further, you have the lighthouse complex. Safeguarding one of the world’s most hectic shipping lanes, it hurls a powerful white beam 60 km into the dark expanse of the ocean. It is the second most powerful lighthouse in European territory after Phare du Creach. In this complex you also have a small cafe. Well worth the drive and apparently it is a historical place where Henry "The Navigator" broke the myth of the end of the world, and sail, establishing the Henry school of navigation afterwards.
