Truly amazing, Almourol Castle, perched dramatically on a small rocky islet in the middle of the Tagus River in central Portugal, is one of the most iconic medieval fortresses in the country and a striking symbol of the nation’s early history. Surrounded by water and accessible only by boat, the castle seems to float above the river, creating an image that is both romantic and mysterious. Its origins trace back to Roman and Visigothic settlements, but its most significant transformation came during the 12th century, when it was rebuilt by the Knights Templar under the orders of Gualdim Pais, the first Grand Master of the Portuguese Templars, after the Christian reconquest of the region. Almourol Castle served both as a defensive stronghold guarding the river and as a symbol of Christian authority in newly reclaimed lands. With its thick granite walls, battlements, and watchtowers, the fortress embodies the military architecture of the Middle Ages, while its isolated location adds to its aura of secrecy and legend. Over the centuries, the castle lost its strategic importance and eventually fell into ruin, but it was restored in the 19th century during the Romantic period, when it became a national monument and a symbol of Portugal’s medieval heritage. Today, Almourol Castle attracts visitors not only for its historical significance but also for its fairytale-like setting, evoking myths of knights, Templars, and hidden treasures, making it one of the most enchanting landmarks in Portugal. Read moreI had the pleasure of visiting Castelo de Almourol and it instantly became one of my favorite historical sites in Portugal. Located on a small island in the middle of the Tagus River, this castle offers a magical and peaceful atmosphere that feels like stepping into a medieval tale. It was originally rebuilt by the Knights Templar in the 12th century and served as a strategic fortress during the Christian Reconquest. The boat ride to reach the castle is short and very scenic, adding a special charm to the experience. Once inside, the structure is well preserved, with tall defensive towers and thick walls that allow you to imagine what life was like for the knights who guarded it centuries ago. The views from the top are breathtaking, especially at sunset. The entrance fee is quite affordable and the entire visit is definitely worth it. I found it peaceful, educational, and truly inspiring. If you enjoy medieval history, architecture, or simply want to enjoy a unique and quiet spot away from the city, this is a must-see destination...
