If you ever find yourself in this region, this museum is a must and you should find a spot in your schedule to visit it. A complete tour should take around 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on attendance and temporary exhibits. The museum showcases the main archeological and geological topics related to the region with, of course, special attention to the prehistoric rock art found in the Côa Valley, and the history of how they were found and preserved. The museum itself is built in a very dramatic and beautiful site, and is and architectural landmark, very well integrated in the landscape. I'm not giving it five stars only due to the lack of air conditioning (it seems to rely on its tall ceilings and air flow for temperature controls), as it can get hot and humid in certain rooms. Other downsides I noted were some of the projections could have a bit more attention to detail (e.g. a panoramic projection consisting of two projectors which were misaligned, another had the second projector turned off, etc.), and there was also a VR part of the tour that seemed to not be working properly and the VR headsets seemed poorly maintained. All in all, the negative aspects should not deter you from visiting. At the end of the tour there's a gift shop and a restaurant with a great view of the...
Read moreThis is the biggest dissapointment of our POrtugal trip. UNESCO World Heritage, so we have investet nearly 3 hours drive from POrto. The "museum" has a very interesting architecture but no contence inside. Some general informations on wikipedia level, some plastic modells, nothing of value.
The trips to the inscriptuin itself MUST be reserved prior to the visit, otherwise is nothing available. The cashier has entered us to a French speaking group and mentioned a price. The tour started 40 minutes late in the middle of nowhere (there is a private souvenir shop there, so they have supported us), the guide showed us the places but finally we had to pay more than double of the price quoted by the museum during the reservation, as "the minimum size" was not reached - no information about it prior to the visit.
It is impressing to see the paintings middle in the nature and shown with very primitive methods - this will probably change in the near future, so enjoy it now - but the organisation aroud this place is much much much below...
Read moreThis was an unbelievable visit. It’s a world heritage site that I only found out about before I could actually add another day or two to my trip. You have to pre-book the off-road tour, which can only handle about six people at a time. In the summer I understand it’s very hot. If you just wanna do the museum and take a look at the river like the photos, I’m showing that’s also fine, but the real experience is to take one of their three limited tours and then hike about a kilometer to some of the rock formations that they let you get close to. Apparently, they only discovered the drawings in the 1950s when Portugal was essentially not well connected to the world because of a dictatorship and it took a while but ultimately UNESCO recognized this as complete world heritage site. The other issue is some of the drawings are submerged by the river because of dam that would supply a lot of hydroelectric power. I didn’t fact check it, but apparently some of the project had stopped to preserve more of...
