ℹ️THE ROCK-HEWN SHELTERS People have lived in the rock-hewn shelters for hundreds of years. In the Meadow you will find at least two shelters that were carved by people. One of them is known as Dionisie the Weaver's Cave and the other as losif's Cave. If you venture even further, you will explore the Agaton. This was built on the edge of a precipice. Unfortunately, because of its location, a large part of the Agaton was destroyed over time by rock slides and earthquakes. The ⛰️ rock-hewn shelters are a historical 🗿 mystery. We say this because there are only a few clues left that point to their origin. There are some things that we can conclude. For example, it seems that a population that came all the way from Anatolia was responsible for carving the shelters. If you visit the Alunis site (Mayoralty of Colti) we'll tell you how we came to this conclusion! It is possible that they were among the first Christians ✝️ to arrive in this part of the world. Later on, monks and hermits lived in the man-made caves and used them as places of worship. Some of the shelters were used until the 1800s. With a few pauses, it seems that people lived in the rock-hewn houses🏠 for more than 1000 years!

Read moreAmazing place, very interesting caves (it’s a shame people vandalised the inside of some of them…) Bring water and food with you, have comfortable clothes and shoes. Horrible road to get there, be careful with your car There are little to no signs to help you know the way There are signs that inform you about the place and the history of the place (from the parking spot to Poiana Cozanei) but to help you know the way and the distance there are no signs. Is important for people to know the pathway to the objective and where to stop. People only go to “Chilia lui Dionisie Tocatorul” because is close and accessible, but for “Fundul pesterii” and “Scaunele lui Negru Voda” people don’t adventure to get to them and its a shame At “Scaunele lui Negru Voda” the sign has fallen to the ground and its old and you can’t understand what’s wrote on it. The same is with the other signs that are in “Poiana Cozanei” they are old and time has washed away the writing. I recommend this place if it’s good weather and no rain, for a little weekend...

Carved in a huge rock, the church has preserved the initially aspect. Above the entrance there is a fish, a paleo-Christian symbol. Dionysius the Spinner Cave (Pestera Dionisie Torcatorul), the stone house where the monk, skillful at spinning and weaving wool chose to live in solitude.
