Around noon we leave Alba Iulia and drive to Calnic. The village in German Kelling, has a fortified church, which is under protection of UNESCO World Heritage.

We are greeted by a cute little dog and have to call a caretaker woman via phone to open the castle.

We are the only guests. What makes this fortified church special is that it was built in the 13th century. and actually was an aristocracy castle at first.

It had a keep and 2 more towers. In 1430 it fell to the community of Calnic, the people built a second wall ring, added the church and raised the keep by two floors. Nice well next to the church. Wine cellar under the tower. On top of the Tower we enjoy a beautiful view over the area. Staircases and ladders are very steep.

Parking lot next to the walls inside....

No long lines, no crowds, no noise, and no children crying everywhere. While these are experiences you might encounter elsewhere, you certainly won’t find them here—thankfully. The main courtyard is beautiful and well-maintained, and the ceramic museum is interesting. However, it doesn’t feature the medieval-style exhibits I’d hoped to see.

The fortress is worth a visit, though exhibits are limited and undated, consisting mostly of ceramic works from the past century. It’s unfortunate, as the fortress itself dates back to the mid-12th century and could feature much more history about its eras and the reconstructions it has undergone, rather than focusing primarily on regional ceramics. Still, it’s...

Right outside Sebes sits Calnic Fortress. It’s unassuming from a distance, but get close and it’s hard not to appreciate its allure.
