An earlier blast furnace had been set up at Toplița in 1781, but the quantity of raw materials it prepared for workshops involved in cast iron refining proved inadequate.

The oldest continuous process blast furnace in Europe. Produced grey iron for castings, with iron ore sourced from Ghelari mines, and charcoal produced locally. There is also a legend saying that some of the iron produced here, made it's way in the structure of the Eiffel...

Ro. - Furnalul de la Govăjdia, județul Hunedoara, este considerat drept monument al arhitecturii industriale inca din anul 2000. Fiind construit intre anii 1806 si 1810 a servit la exploatarea minereurilor de fier din zona. Monumentul nu este protejat ci lasat in paragina, intrarea este gratis, locul pare abandonat.
