A short description:
The old trees, aged between 400 and 600 years and diameters up to 1.8 m, await you on the plateau near Sighisoara, in the largest and best-preserved habitat of wooded pasture with centuries-old oaks in central and eastern Europe . Here, in the middle of the forest, in only 133 ha, you can find 10% of the plants known at the national level (380 species and subspecies of plants).
A total of 115 vertebrate species have been identified here, most of which are protected by law. Favorite place for mushroom pickers (30 edible species), dozens of playful butterflies welcome you here in summer, and the atmosphere is from another world.
Many species of plants and animals – woodpeckers, songbirds, lizards, bats or butterflies – can be seen here, depending on the season and time of day. Please do not disturb, harm or capture them. Just outside the entrance, on the left side, there are two fallen oaks and one about to fall. An old oak, even a dead one, harbors a whole living universe (from woodpeckers, bats and woodpeckers, to algae, lichens and insects) and therefore it is important to leave it where it fell. At the edge of the forest is one of the oldest oak trees in the reserve, with a circumference of over 7.1 m and an estimated age of over 700 years! The narrowest part of the plateau is suggestively named "Wolves Pass" because, during the winter, you will certainly find traces of wolves, brown bears or wild cats there.
My opinion:
We went on a Sunday and there where a few people there but the place is so vast that it will not feel crowded at all. Listening to the birds in spring was so delightful. The OLD Grandpa is the biggest OAK that you can find at this location. Spend a few hours walking here and you will fell refreshed and full of energy. If you go to Sighisoara do not miss this location, is well work the road until you reach the location. Do not litter and if you see some and you have the possibility to take it to town...
Read moreWhen visiting Sighisoara, don’t miss that place. Besides being the largest multi-secular oaks reserve in Europe, you will have a wonderful feeling when roaming the 133 hectares of the reserve. Bonus, you can also visit the neighboring beech forest, with some beautiful trees as well. The oldest oak in the reserve is more than 800 years old, meaning it witnessed the birth and the decay of a great civilization, the Saxon one. Been there with The Saxon House Garbova . Fantastic place, I highly recommend it, especially if you travel with children. Free entrance, picnic places with benches and tables. You literally can walk there from the city. The Via Transilvanica path cross the...
Read moreNice little trail outside of Sighsoara. Well marked with tiny T signs. The ancient oaks were interesting. Would have preferred more forest hiking, but was spooky in the morning. See brown bear prints kept me out. When I returned, the hotel said, "Never hike there alone. Last month, a female hiker was killed by a bear. It was far from here, but as you can see, there are bear." Certainly worth the hike. But, good...
