The ruins of the medieval fortress of Tricule have their foundation today in the waters of the Danube. Even from the 15th century, in the locality of Svinița, there existed a stone wall fortification placed on a hill. It was abandoned due to the lack of water. After the fortress of Svinița (defended by the Teutonic Knights) was destroyed, its material was used to build the Fortress of Tricule (16th century).
In the second half of the 16th century, Petru Petrović, besides the fortresses of Lugoj, Caransebeș, and Mehadia, and also those in the Danube Valley, built in Svinița a fortification made up of three tower-turrets. These were connected by a palisade fence – an enclosure in a triangular shape.
It appears that the towers had two levels, the upper one serving as an observation platform. The fortification played an important role in the fights to control this area. The fortress had the mission to stop Turkish incursions. It was successively conquered by Austrians, Turks, and hajduks.
