A religious gem! Northwest of Târgu Neamţ, at the foot of the Carpathians, is the oldest and largest monastery in Moldova: the Mânăstirea Neamț (literally translated "German Monastery"). The foundation of this Romanian Orthodox monastery is attributed to Prince Petru I Muşat (1371-1375), but most likely a community of monks had been living here since the 12th century. The monastery is a highlight of Moldavian architecture that reached its peak during the time of Stephen the Great. The current main church of the monastery, the Biserica Înălţarea Domnului (the Curch of the Ascencion), was built by him in the late 15th century. Some of the other highlights are the large mosaic above the entrance, the crypt, the library and the former altar screen from the Neamţ Fortress. Outside the walls of the monastery there are two more interesting buildings: the St. Ioan Bogoslovul church with the monastery cemetery and the very striking Agheazmatar building, which now houses a bookshop. A very beautiful and interesting destination,...

While visiting the monastery I saw this starving sick dog. I fed him but he clearly needed some consistent help. I ask one of the monks if they would be interested in taking him on as a project. “No“. If no one was going to help him live, then he at least deserves a compassionate death to end his misery. The next day I drove to the nearest town and found a vet, Dr. Adrian at Farmacie Veterinarã. who would go to the monastery to put the dog down. Dr. Adrian ask if there was a contact person that would let him know when the dog showed up. I drove back to the monastery, spoke with the same monk, and asked if he would be willing to inform the vet when the dog was there. The response was “No“. I asked if there was someone else I could speak with “No”. I approached a couple of other monks: they had no desire to engage. I’m really surprised and disappointed by their the lack of compassion for another...

A monk (masculine gender) Orthodox monastery that holds one of the oldest painted icons in the Orthodox world, The Virgin Mary with Baby Jesus in her arms, painted in the 7th sentury in the year 665 in Constantinople and eventually gifted to the romanian country of Moldova, covered in golden'ed silver and gems in the year 1844 - 1845 is the centerpiece of the main chirch and surrounded by an incredibly beautiful monastic settlement, close to theological school and in a landscape that God Himself would want to live. Superb and Divine... must visit !!!! As well close to Reserve Bisons and Carpathian Fauna "Dragoş Vodă". Must see both... one for nature and one for spirituality and personal relationship with God.
