The Valea Viilor fortified church is absolutely amazing, not because is the best or the greatest, but because it gives you a huge sense of originality, it's like a time capsule, it seems nothing happened here in the last 200 years or more. The church is not really a tourists magnet so one can experience a calm state frozen in time. We went up the bell tower where we discovered many bells, from small ones to large. and a nice view over the village. The fortified walls are close to the church and the place looks kind of romantic and cozy. Overall the church could use an urgent restoration program. Climbing the tower I was afraid I will be the last person to climb it because the degradation shows everywhere. There isn't to much to see from the historic point of view, but you could spend about an 2 hours looking around the place. When we visited the church, there was just one man taking care of the place and it was a pleasure to talk about the history of the village and church....
Read moreThis is a great example of a fortified church to visit. Not many tourists around as it's in a local area. The church itself is in real need of funding and protection work as a lot of artifacts seemed to be laying around. I hope it's able to get some sort of grant from the government or something. There are two towers you can climb both offering different views across the area. One tower is a large roof and the other goes upto a bell tower. The ladders are a bit creaky so you should make your own judgement. The fortified aspect of the church is clear to see with thick exterior walls and vantage points for defending against attackers. I think it's a great place to visit but there isn't much else surrounding it in terms of other...
Read moreThe fortified church is located near the main road. If you get there outside visiting hours just call the posted phone number and the keeper will come. There is a small museum which displays some old pictures and some traditional clothing. The fortified church keeps a very simple and clean look. The rib vaulted ceiling of the churh though simple is eyecatching. A mix of corck screw stairs and wooden stairs takes you to the top of the tower where you can find the three bells and a nice view. But you can also take a photo from the narrow apertures on your way to the top. One of them oversees the nowadays road and the photo from that particular window may bring a nice touch. You’re free to explore...
