As authentic as it gets, provided that you know what you sign up for: this forest railway was built to then Austro-Hungarian narrow-track specifications. It is a private-owned logging railroad, so expect a very bumpy and slow ride. The scenery more than makes up for it, while the steam-powered locomotives (if you're among the lucky ones to get one of those to pull the train you're on) add tremendously to the overall tone and feel of it all. Food available on the train at the midway stop (10 km / an hour) and at the farthest stop ("Paltinu", some 21 km away, making for about two hours of riding), as well as rather unsanitary toilets. No toilets or otherwise other facilities on the train. There is a basic museum there. The place often hosts popular or classical music events.

Pro: Nice views, landscape is amazing, the experience of the old train with the specific old train sound (choof-choof) is very very nice, it relaxed me so much. Cons: train seats are very unconfortable, the ride feels too long (5-6 hrs), the stops that the train makes feel like an advertisement, it stops once for 15 mins to make you buy coffee and some traditional pastry (which is very delicious, must buy) and then the final stop to make you buy the lunch (grill and rice etc) food up there is not so good. Be aware of the tree branches, a guy dropped his phone on the railway because he hit his selfie stick off of a tree. Would recommend it on winter with the snow or in the spring when everything is green, I went on the end of summer. Here are some photos that you can judge.

Mocanita is a great once-in-a-lifetime experience especially for the kids. The ride is very long, pretty tiring and at times quite bummpy and if situated in the first passenger car the smoky steam quite heavy. The price is a bit steep, I just wished the views were more spectacular to make up for it. The first train leaves at 9 am sharp. Must be there half an hour earlier if not more if the tickets are to be purchased there and not online. If the day gets extremely busy, they do add a second steam train to leave at 9:30 and even a third one to leave at 10 am. The 9:30 am train returns back between 2:45 and 3:15. In Paltin when the train stops you can buy lunch and cold drinks, a great time for a picnic.

ATENTIE ! Recomand lectura completa.

I went there because it's supposed to be a 'most' while traveling in Romania. But after the experience I think is just a tourist trap. Of course you need to live it yourself to agree or not. I read similar things and anyways I went. The smoke of the train is annoying. On the way go everybody is exciting, after there's a lunch break where you can't feel the nature because the music is loud and the atmosphere is commercial. On the way you can see how everybody is bored or even sleeping. Romania is full of nature and mountains so there's no actual need to go there. As a tip, in order to get to Vise de seus, I took a mini bus from gura humoroloi. It was a several hours ride where I passed by mountains, small paths, village life, amazing sunset. I enjoyed much more this ride than the one in the train....
