One of the oldest religious settlements in Romania, Hodos-Bodrog monastery was first documented in 1177. Tradition has it that, originally, the area was used as pasture for herds. A grazing bull by the name of Hodos discovered a miraculous icon of Mother of God with Jesus and a monastery was built on that spot. Today, the monastery is comprised from numerous buildings, some of which are open to the public, and a lovely garden. During the years, many painters and artists contributed to the monastery, and some of their work can still be enjoyed. The old church still stands, with stone walls dating back to the 1300’s which can still be seen. It is a jewel worth visiting, both because of its serene and quiet energy and for the many religious artifacts it is housing. The original miraculous icon is straight ahead and to the left. On the right side, a collection of relics can be viewed; above the door, the head of Hodos the bull is always watching. Access to the monastery is easy, as it is close to A1 highway.
