White Mosque (Ak Mosque), nestled near the Bolgar Historical and Archaeological Complex in Tatarstan, is a modern architectural masterpiece and a vivid symbol of faith, culture, and revival. Opened in 2012, it was inaugurated as part of a broader initiative to revive Bolgar’s legacy as the cradle of Islam for Volga Bulgaria.
Clad entirely in pristine white marble, the mosque stands beside a courtyard surrounded by an arcade of 88 slender columns and a reflective fountain. Its two elegant minarets soar 46.5 m high, flanking a main dome of 10 m in diameter. Inside, the dome rises to about 17 m, bathing the space in gentle, natural light.
Though modest in scale—serving around 300 worshippers (plus 180 women on a mezzanine level)—this mosque forms an integrated complex with a madrasa, imam residence, and conference facilities. Together they serve educational and community functions, hosting daily prayers, Quran recitations, religious classes, and interfaith dialogue.
Inspired by global Islamic architecture and likened by locals to a "Northern Taj Mahal," the mosque’s mirrored reflection on the fountain, stained-glass embellishments, and symbolic spaces make it visually striking. At night, the illumination gives the complex a magical aura against the calm Tatar landscape.
