The Orlov Gate, also known as the Gatchina Gate, is a triumphal arch located at the boundary of Catherine Park in Tsarskoe Selo (now Pushkin), near St. Petersburg, Russia. Constructed between 1777 and 1782, the gate marks the beginning of the road to Gatchina, the former estate of Count Grigory Orlov. Empress Catherine II commissioned the gate to honor Count Orlov for his role in combating the plague epidemic in Moscow in 1771. The side of the gate facing Gatchina bears an inscription from poet Vasily Maikov: “Moscow has been delivered from misfortune by Orlov.” Designed by Italian architect Antonio Rinaldi, the gate features a single-span triumphal arch adorned with columns and pilasters reminiscent of Ancient Roman architecture. It is constructed using pink Tivdia marble for the columns and panels, complemented by grey marble for the main structure. The Orlov Gate stands as a testament to the architectural grandeur of the era and commemorates Count Orlov’s contributions to Russian history.
