Initially, we planned to explore Akagera National Park on our own, but at the last minute, we decided to hire a guide for 2.5 days. We were a bit concerned about the added expense of accommodations and food, but Mihindi Campsite offered reasonable rates, and we realized having a guide would significantly increase our chances of seeing rhinos.
Before our trip, I got in touch with Emmanuel who is a guide at Akagera National Park. He provided us with tips and mentioned he might be available as our guide. We were thrilled when he indeed became our guide for our stay!
On our first day, we explored the southern region of the park. While we were excited to see hippos, giraffes, and elephants, we didn’t encounter as many animals. The night drive was a bit rainy, which kept many animals hidden, but the early morning boat tour made everything more than right. We were treated to spectacular views of various crocodiles, stunning birds, hippos, and buffalos, making for a truly wonderful experience.
After our first day, we went to the central and northern parts of the park, where we had incredible wildlife encounters. We spotted lions, zebras, and, most importantly, rhinos! The highlight was witnessing five rhinos up close, an unforgettable moment we attribute to Emmanuel’s expertise.
Emmanuel is not only knowledgeable and cheerful but also passionate about wildlife and the culture of Rwanda. His insights and enthusiasm greatly enriched our adventure. We were delighted with our decision to hire a guide for our time in the park—it made our experience much more rewarding.
In summary, our trip to Akagera National Park was extraordinary, and we highly recommend hiring a guide. It truly enhances the experience, and you won’t be...
