Since young, I always had the mindset that English is a subject that cannot be learnt or mastered, but rather something that can only be managed by some people with strong language, which I often mistook as an ability being present in them naturally.
Although I always felt that my answers to the comprehension questions were quite apt most of the times, I always ended up scoring borderline grades, or worse, especially in Secondary school but I wasn’t motivated to try harder and improve myself as I convinced myself that it is impossible for me to ever do better in English.
In my school, although my teachers tried different methods of teaching English such as splitting us up into small groups which would allow us to discuss our answers among our peers and support one another; ultimately, it wasn’t enough for me to progress as the answering techniques were not clearly shared to us and I had difficulties understanding what was required of me in each of the components in the paper.
When I heard of Edu Edge through my brother, I was really desperate for help as I was afraid of not being able to manage the standards of upper sec English. Yet, I was still hesitant and wondered if it would be of any use to me because I just felt as though English would always be a hurdle that I will never be able to overcome. However, the support that I received from Mr Cheng and the other Edu Edge teachers were extremely unique and I could feel myself improving from time to time. The step-by-step guidance provided for every component enabled me to understand what exactly I had to do and the skills I had to use.
When the 4(S) thinking strategy was introduced to us, I initially thought that I wouldn’t have the time to perform those steps in exam conditions and hence, I didn’t make use of the skills I was imparted with during lessons and so I continued failing my comprehension. However, I followed the steps for summary writing and to my surprise, I improved from my usual 8-9 out of 15 to 12/15 in just one try and I was extremely impressed and that was when I truly understood how powerful and important the techniques taught to us were.
When I first joined Edu Edge in Sec 3 I was scoring B4 but when I was in sec 4, my grades began to deteriorate and I was passing at borderline level throughout. That’s when I realised that the sole reason was that I didn’t attempt to use the techniques taught to me in lessons when I was doing my internal school exams. The skills were also easily applicable once I took the effort to revisit and understand them and I finally managed to score an A2 for my English O level examination!
As for paper 1, I was always choosing argumentative as I thought that the narrative genre would require extensive amount of creativity and good language in order to describe in a more interactive manner. However, I was always scoring 15-17/30 because I often went out of point in the argumentative style of writing. Nevertheless, when Mr Cheng taught me the skills needed for narrative and descriptive style, I began realising my strength and I quickly changed the question type I chose for exams. Although it was quite late as I only made that decision in my Prelims, I could see the drastic change again, now that I had followed whatever Mr Cheng had advised me to do, and that’s how I managed to improve and achieve my desired grade in the end!
I am really grateful to Mr Cheng and the other Edu Edge teachers because they never fail to set aside a lot of time for us students to learn English in the best possible way! They are all very approachable and willing to give extra help as long as we try our best and do our part by completing what we are required to do. Strengthening our language and helping us gain confidence have always been their priority and I am really thankful for that!
For my juniors, I would like to encourage you to consistently try your best to apply the skills taught in class because I guarantee that they would certainly bring you to greater heights in a short period of time as long as you try since even I...
Read moreEnglish has always been a weaker subject of mine. I was consistently obtaining borderline passes and I had quickly given up on studying for English. Back then, I had simply decided to let fate run its own course and focus more on my other subjects.
However, I knew that this mentality would not help me in the long run as English was my L1 subject. I was aware that it was essential for me to do well so as to enter my first choice of a good JC/ poly course.
I quickly began looking for help from my school teachers and local tuition centres. I was sadly disappointed when I received insufficient support from teachers where their ‘feel good’ advice for students was to simply 'read more' and 'practise more'. None of them really focused on explaining WHY I was making those errors and HOW I can prevent myself from making the same errors again.
At the various tuition centres that I previously attended, their lessons were simply 2-3 hours of essay writing and compre followed by the answers being flashed on the screen. I found this to be a waste time and money and promptly quit from the centres. (For those of you who think that centres which simply focus on giving lots of compre and compo are good, think again.)
As time went by with the O levels fast approaching, my English grades were still stuck at C5 and C6. This resulted in me become increasingly desperate to find a tutor who was able to effectively teach me how to fully prepare myself for English.
By chance, when my parents were online looking for an English tutor, they stumbled upon EduEdge with their ‘Formulaic-Based’ lessons, where they taught English using Formulas. Seeing as it was something new and I had nothing to lose, I went ahead and signed up. Since then, I had never looked back.
Compared to the multiple tuition centres I had attended previously, EduEdge is a league above the rest, or even a league of their own if I may say. This is heavily attributed to their formula-style teaching (E.g 4S strategy, ASAP, and PIVEO) which when paired with their step-by-step teaching approach - which can elevate any attentive students’ English grade by multiple levels.
Another unique positive quality I found in EduEdge was the detail the tutors put into marking the essays submitted by students. Every sentence of an essay was carefully analysed, before comments for improvement were given as well as a final grade. The marking is so detail, that by incorporating everything the EduEdge Tutors comment about in a single essay, students can improve their standard of writing tremendously.
Due to the hard work and dedication of myself and the EduEdge Teachers, I was able to improve from a C6 to an A2. A massive 4-band Improvement!
To all my juniors who have their N/O levels coming up: If you wish to attain that Distinction, it is very simple and definitely possible. All you have to do is complete the RISE every week and submit all essays. Incorporate all formulae taught to you and act upon the comments given by the EduEdge Teachers on your essays. Make sure you do not commit the same mistakes again for your next essay! Most importantly, if you have any doubts, don't be afraid to ask!
After successfully improving my english grade from C6 to A2 by attending lessons at eduedge during my o levels, i knew this was a centre i could trust with My A level results.
As time went by with the A levels fast approaching, my GP grades as expected steadily improved. This this was entirely due to EduEdge's ‘Formulaic-Based’ lessons, where they taught GP using Formulas. Read moreI joined EduEdge after my Secondary One Mid Year Examinations where I scored a C6 for English. (I barely passed oops). Getting a C6 was a wake-up call for me as I know that English is a very important subject be it in secondary school or the future. I knew that I needed to do well in it to get promoted to secondary two and even get into my dream junior college. Coincidentally, I managed to chance upon EduEdge on the Internet and was convinced by the testimonials from the previous batches of EduEdge students! I was inspired by their Eduedge stories and was hoping for a miracle to happen to me just like how it happened to them. In hindsight, this was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in the four years of my secondary school life. Now, look at me! I'm currently writing this testimonial to share my story to inspire my juniors.
After coming to EduEdge, my grades have tremendously improved from a C6 to consistent B3s and an occasional A2. My improvement has been attributed to the efforts of my Eduedge teachers. They are very approachable and patient when it comes to teaching us. I really appreciate the fact that they are also very open to answering our questions be it online or offline. EduEdge teachers are extremely dedicated and passionate about what they teach. One thing about Eduedge that stands out from other English tuition centres is that they adopt a more formula-based teaching approach whereby students are equipped with specially curated formulas to tackle examination questions with ease! For instance, instead of the rigid PEEL structure taught at most schools, formulas like SPEAR, FATCORP, SPOTVCD, and the 4S Answering Strategy are being taught here at EduEdge! A formula that has significantly helped me in my O level paper two summary is “IRE” :-)
English has never been my strong suit. In fact, I was consistently relying on my Higher Chinese for my L1 in my L1R5. However, things took a turn during O levels! I miraculously scored my first A1 in English! I was more than happy. Looking back, I honestly couldn't have done it without the help and support from the EduEdge team. I really appreciate all the EduEdge lessons and Power Revision sessions. (A big shoutout to Teacher Derek, Teacher Jian Hung and the rest of the EduEdge family! Thank you for supporting me throughout my English journey.) Having an A1 in English has enabled me to achieve a better L1R5 score to get me into my dream junior college.
To all my juniors who would like to improve their English: I would like to advise you to simply trust the EduEdge learning process. I vehemently believe that all of you are in the good hands of our dedicated EduEdge teachers. Remember to always complete your RISE homework on time to receive detailed feedback from the teachers to improve your language! However, do note that English isn’t something that can be mastered in a day or two just like how Rome wasn't built in a day. The mastery of the English Language ultimately boils down to your efforts and hard work. Pay attention to all lessons and jot down important notes when necessary. Most importantly, remember to consistently apply the “formula-style” techniques that were taught by our dear EduEdge teachers. Confucius once said “The man who asks a question is a fool for a minute, the man who does not ask is a fool for life.” Hence, please do not feel afraid or shy to approach our friendly Eduedge teachers whenever in doubt! Lastly, I strongly advise you to not belittle the importance of English. It is one of the key subjects required to get you into your desired jc/poly course. Having said that, I sincerely wish all of you nothing but the best for your N and O levels! Nothing’s impossible. Even the word “Impossible” says “Im-possible”. There is no doubt that the journey to success will be an arduous one but trust me, your efforts will pay off just like how I’ve improved from a C6 to an A1 from Secondary One to O levels with the help of the Eduedge...
