Anyone who likes old steam locomotives must come to visit Čierny Balog. Narrow track railway is very unique and it was originally used for transporting wood from surrounding valleys. If you decide to drive there, not far away from the station is paid carpark. Daily charge is 7 euros. There are three lines, where two are operated by restored diesel locomotive and one is operated by steam locomotive. We bought ticket for all three lines and it costs us 50 euros for one adult and one child to 14.99 years old. There is extra charge of 2 euros for steam locomotive per person. All tickets are returns. Railway is run by volunteers and they done excellent job. Main buildings are like new and locomotives are in very good condition as well. You can use card at the ticket office rest is unfortunately cash only. Rides are smooth as the trains don't go very fast. Only negative is that there is no entertainment at the end of the each line. Open museum is closed so you can just walk around for 15 minutes observing local nature. Other two lines stop for 10 minutes and head back. Rides are not cheap so I would appreciate a bit of entertainment. There is souvenir shop and restaurant at the main station. You may be lucky to see football match as one of the lines passes through the...
Read moreThis is an attraction you must not miss when passing this location, especially with kids. You can find small steam and diesel engines with special opened wagons driving through beautiful nature scenery with romantic views. It's been originally created for wood and another goods distribution since early 20th century but later on it lost its reasoning due to more effective transport types. There's been lot of effort given to make it working again and keeping it alive. There's an all year service it's just about to choose the right season most filling your expectations. The network consists of three terminals - Chvatimech - currently under reconstruction, Vydrovo and Šánske with central point in Čierny Balog. Vydrovo offers an additional attraction - open-air museum dedicated to the local nature where you can get some global know how as well. Track to Šánske passes through villages where you can see another kind of unusual attraction - railroad crosses the local football stadium just in front of the visitors tribune. It is always great time being there enjoing the life and nature passing slowly having...
Read morePretty extensive collection of railway buildings and facilities to inspect, lot of small engines and wagons, even some in a beautiful state of decay, overgrown with plants. Riding the three routes of the trains was ok, but after some time repetitive. Sanske line was rather boring, Dobroc (with rail passing through the football pitch, under the seats) the most interesting, Vydrovo line was ok.
The open-air museum is rather scattered, looks ok, but slightly sterile. The end of train lines are reliably dead-ends, with not much to admire there. The central Cierny Balog venue seems...
