An interesting blend of "socialist realism" (or a "traditional" east-European modernist architecture), small town "culture house" and a world-class museum. The collection of art-pieces (or replicas, well, it's modern art) is pretty decent, maybe underwhelming on the European scale, but "stunning" considering the location in a small town "at the end of the world" surrounding it.
I did not like some parts of the exhibition that assembled the trivia of Warhol (family), objects they touched, wore, wrote - in almost religious adoration. The anxious need to underscore (twice or thrice) his family's east-Slovak and Ruthenian origins. It felt slightly preposterous.
On the other hand, I was perplexed by the paradox of showing so many LGBTI+ figures of the Warhol's artistic circles (and the era) while so cautiously taming or omitting their LGBTI+ identity and life. In one word: bowdlerized. Considering the location, somewhat understandable. Taking the ambitions of the place - and the pride it manifests to anxiously associate the artist with the...
Read morethis is one of the most special places you can visit in Slovakia. it is located in the middle of nowhere near the village where Andys mother was born and lived. the city of medzilaborce where the museum is located combines sometimes absurd images of human endeavour with untouched nature in the surroundings, The museum itself is run by very well educated staff that will explain to you not only all the mystics around Andy warhols works that are located in the museum but also of other well known modern artists in pop art. there is a planty of originals located in the museum that one wouldn't expect to see in such distant place. you can also see exposition of pictures taken by a famous Slovak musician on his travels that are rather breathtaking. so to summarise, this is a "must see" if you are in the area and really a good idea for a destination to plan...
Read moreAlthough the foreign tourists come to see this museum, it doesn't t have to offer enough. When you come, there is an old selfcoffee machine in the entry, a little disappointing. Then you see stairs, they are painted and I loved them, but the office&gift shop (two in one) are again quite strange. Lots of things of the museum were sent abroad, we came but we could only see a photo or read a mention. The 1st room about Warhol's life has strange walls decorated with paper of A4 format. Something is missing to this museum. After the visit, there is no place to take coffee and talk about what you have seen. The visit of the museum is quick however the journey to Medzilaborce is long-long. Look also for other things to look at and visit...
