Staying in a castle was on my bucket list, so when I found Grad Strmol, I could not resist. ||||When we arrived, Karin, the hostess, gave us a tour of the castle and told us about its history. Grad Strmol was originally built in the 1700s, and it was last owned by Rado and Ksenija Hribar, who purchased it in 1936. The Hribars furnished the castle lavishly and you can still see many of their furniture pieces in the castle. The Hribars lived a lavish lifestyle with hunting expeditions, travel, golf, etc. They were also very generous in their support of the local economy. Tragically, they were taken from their home in the night during January 1944 and killed by local partisans.||||We stayed in a double room, which had replicas of furniture that would have been in the castle when it was owned by the Hribars. The bed was very comfortable, although we were surprised to find that there was a gap of about six inches between the two twin beds when they had been pushed together to make a king-size bed at our request. No problem--we simply rolled an extra blanket and filled the space with that.||||Breakfast included various breads, croissants, yogurts, meats and cheeses and we were asked if we wanted eggs. It was served at a large, beautiful wooden table in the study. ||||The grounds has several hiking trails and is beautifully maintained. ||||If you have ever wanted to stay in a castle, then you should definitely check out Grad Strmol!
