Cerkev Gospodovega vnebohoda, Bogojina — Attraction in Moravske Toplice

You have to add this location to your to-visit-list. Especially, if you are a big fan of architecture or quirky churches.

This peculiar looking church was designed by Plečnik, a renowned architect with Slovenian roots. His legacy can be found all over Slovenia, but finding this hidden gem in Prekmurje, Bogojina, was worth a short detour. It definitely made my day.

Plečnik kept the structure of the old church and added several new structures to it. The clay artefacts on the ceiling, inside the church, were made by local artists. The marvel pillars, the lighting fixtures and windows are well thought through by the architect as well. Anyhow, the fact that such a famous architect wanted to redesign a church in the middle of nowhere is quite intriguing as well.

That being said, drive to Bogojina and check the Bela Golobica, or the white dove (the local nickname for the church), out for yourself. It's claimed to be one of the most beautiful contemporary churches in Slovenia.

The church was built between 1924 and 1927 at a right angle to an older single-nave baroque church. The architect put a dominant cylindrical tower next to the entrance - a belfry with forms typical for Plečnik. On top of it stands a terrace with an additional tower, and another one at the end of the old church. Above the front entrance a statue of Christ reigns from a simple column. The nave is accentuated by serried arcades on the north and south side. Plečnik conformed to regional building tradition and used old Christian architectural features (stone columns, flat wooden ceiling). The ceiling is unique - made of round beams and boards.
