Razgledni Stolp – Forest bathing near Ljubljana.
The peak of Staneta Kosca stands eyeball to eyeball with Šmarna Gora. The geological stand-off between these two hills is one for the books!
Yet, when you’re looking for a peaceful location near Ljubljana for a day of forest bathing, this forested hillside is the right place. Plenty of people stroll through this forest on holidays and weekends, but they’re more dispersed throughout the forest, making it feel more peaceful.
This observation tower (“razgledni stolp” in Slovene) sits above a small village called Rašica and is about 17m tall. Don’t worry; there are stairs, so you don’t have to use superpowers to reach the top—no need to reveal your secret identity. Once you’ve conquered those last few steps, you can enjoy a fantastic view of Ljubljana, the Kamnik–Savinja Alps, and central Slovenia.
If you’ve parked your car here: 46°08'00.0"N 14°30'13.2"E (Google maps coordinates: 46.133343, 14.503664), you should walk towards the houses a bit down the street. The first signposts will appear on your left and guide you into the forest. If you’re fortunate enough, you’ll be able to observe the inspiring art of careless Balkan parking, a talent most Slovenes master as soon as they get their driving license!
There are several well-marked pathways (red arrows and red and white circles painted on trees and rocks), but I suggest following the Vrh Staneta Kosca signs. These will take you to the observation tower and the nearby inn that serves typical Slovene dishes (Tip: try their Štrukli!) and well-deserved coffee at...
Read moreThe Rašica hill (you read it like 'RASHIZA') with its 641 meters of height (Ljubljana is at 295 meters) is a little bit lower than the 'next door' Mount Saint Mary or better yet Šmarna gora hill (669 meters - distinctive because of its church Cerkev Rožnovenske Matere Božje) but it has a FAR better view. In the photos that I have provided (winter season view) you can see just 180 degrees, basically just the mountains which are the last part of the Alps or better yet last part of the long Alp chain. From Rašica you can see 90 km into distance or an area of 25.000 km2 (which is 5.000 more than entire country). If it wasn't for hills, you would see the Adriatic sea! The view from Rašica provides so much that it would be hard to describe everything. The photos are from early 2000's. One of them shows the highest mountain of not just Slovenia but former Yugoslavia as well - Triglav, 2864 meters. From Triglav you can see all the way to Venice or better yet 190 km into distance and it's the third highest peak of the...
Read moreOur best time in Ljubljana. Accessible by a hike, the climb is less difficult than Šmarna gora and the view is much better. It is possible to start a hike from a Bus stop. Take line 8 from Ljubljana to GAMELJNE. At GAMELJNE, there is a shop, where you can get some water, or something.
Several hikes are possible, with a minimum loop of 7 km, from the bus stop. You will find a small restaurant, with very good local specialties, where the locals also eat or have a drink. don't hesitate to stop there!
The view is truly incredible, and the hike too, it's very calm.
The start of the hill, in the forest from GAMELJNE, was quite steep, so equip yourself as you would for a hike.
