Use this gate, if its closest to where you are vacationing. Always use the gate closest to you and drive through the park to get to where you would like to go. - this way you get the most of it.

We didn't get to the Orpen gate at our planned time and missed a pride of lions by a couple of hours. Anyone entering through Orpen, I would suggest you be there prior to open time. Or use it at your exit time (close to sunset or at sunset time)

We saw a lot of wildlife (our route was orpen through to skukuza) including a leopardess and her cub. It was beautiful!!!

Definitely get there early and prepare to spend the day. Take a picnic, use the rest camps. Go slow, be patient and enjoy the "hunt" as you spot the wildlife.

PS: buy tickets in advance if you don't want to spend a few minutes buying them when you get there.

Also, if you have binoculars or special cameras - definitely...

During our recent trip from Phalaborwa to Hazyview, we opted for the gate and park route instead of the alternative road, which was in poor condition and deemed unsafe due to recent floods. However, our plans were quickly derailed when we reached the second checkpoint after making the required payment. To our dismay, the security personnel confiscated all the wine and spirits we had in our trailer and vehicle, even though all the units were sealed and boxed. There were no signs at reception explaining this policy, nor were we given any warning beforehand. As a result, we suffered a significant loss of nearly R2500 worth of liquor, which we had intended to gift to our family in Hazyview...

Pay point at the fuel station doesn't work. So I had to teach the staff to go outside the office to get a signal . On our way out the same gate, same issue with the pay point!!! Had to drive 70km on an empty tank to find fuel. It's disgusting that the office pay point works fine to collect and everyone's entrance fee but a much needed commodity of fuel you can't get when the Kruger is based on self drive!!! Management has to step up and resolve this issue!! Not only that but teach the pump attendants the difference of R250 and R2500 as what we were almost charged if not checking diligently. So folks check...

Early morning, close to the Orpen gate, we came across this pride of lions. The male was completely in charge. He was taking a nap in the middle of the road and all vehicles had to drive around him. He was so lazy, he did not even get up to take a wee. He did his business right in the road while lying motion less. That is so nice when visiting the Kruger National Park. The lions go on with their lives without being bothered by us - not scared of us human beings at all. You have the privilege of seeing them very close by.

This gate is made up of two parts: when going into the park, you first get past the official entrance gate with the petrol station. Then you drive on and just before you enter the actual park, you get past some shops, a reception and a coffee place. All nicely done. When ordering a cappuccino at the barista place, I recommend you request and extra shot of coffee - unless you like a very milky coffee of course…

Very pleasant apart from one human being who was working at the Information desk who was to busy to attend to us because he was on his cellphone talking to what sounded like his girlfriend 😏. Another than that the rest of the stuff we encountered was very friendly and helpful we enjoyed the visit so much so that the next one we plan book accommodation in side the reserve.
