A beautiful nature reserve and recently just opened again after being closed to the public for a few years. This is an important natural asset in the EThekwini area. It has a range of biomes, from Scarp Forests, Riverine Forests to the highly threatened KZN Sandstone Sourveld Grasslands. Together these house an astounding diversity of fauna and flora. There are many sheer cliffs and many inaccessible areas. Birding is superb in this area and you could easily see the resident Crowned Eagles and other rare species. There are trails to waterfalls and also down to the river at the bottom of the gorge. If you are going hiking, best check beforehand which trails are open and take a map if you’re unsure of navigating. Rock climbing is another activity but check with the Mountain Club about which sites are currently accessible. A big thanks to Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife for excellent management of the site.

I have heard so much about Krantzkloof Nature Reserve and finally got the chance to go hiking there recently. Have tried going before but never managed to get in as only a certain amount of people are allowed in so you need to get there by 06:00. Ok, i heard it was a tough trail but i didn't think it was going to be as rough as it was. This trail is defintely not for the faint hearted - we did the Molweni trail. You either going down steep slopes or walking up them. There are very few places that are flat. You have to climb over rocks quite often and you definitely need to move with a walking stick for the big spider webs. We crossed about 4 streams - had to take takkies off then put on again. We all fell at some stage of the hike. You definitely need proper hiking shoes. We walked for 6 hours and only did 10kms. It was definitely an experience is all i can say. If you are up for a challenge and fit you will enjoy it. As for me im not sure if i will ever go back again lol.

Krantzkloof Nature reserve is an idyllic spot, perfect for the family to relax surrounded by nature. The picnic sites are neat and well maintained, with clever knobbled concrete bases to assist with keeping the areas dry. There are several well-made braai areas and the public toilets are extremely clean. The reasonable entrance fee keeps unwanted feet out while affording a well-maintained nature facility. The area boasts several well-maintained, beautiful walks to various waterfalls, each with fantastic 3D barcode signs, leading the nature lover to really well-presented Web sites describing each spot. This is a wonderful destination for the whole family.

It’s an amazing short hike which is 3km, which is also great for beginners, couples as well as families. There are a few challenging areas throughout the trail. The trail has an amazing view of the George once you get to the peak as well as a slight view of the waterfall as you cross the bridge, where you can take loads of pictures if you’re a socialite. As you descend the slopes of the trail which some areas are quite sharp so you need to treat with caution, you’re welcomed with a scenic view of the water at the bottom of the trail..,,,,

Important things to note: only cash accepted as a payment method, (R50 adults & R20 for children) be there before midday to avoid being denied entry, carry extra refreshments, use good hiking boots as the waterfall trail gets slippery due to rainfall and some areas are steep. Overall good scenery, there was a few usable picnic tables and a braai area, toilets are available. Looking forward to doing the forest trail during our next visit. It was a good experience.

Absolutely beautiful, many trails to go on, not quite sure which one i went one, I took 2 trails they were stunning, can be a few challenging places, there are 2 waterfalls that i know of which are stunning to take pictures of. Don't forget to come in suitable clothing .There is a picnic area available, everything is absolutely perfect, have to come here again. I don't think it's a good idea to bring small kids it could be a bit dangerous for the young ones
