This place is a Labour of Love (no platitudes) of architect, artist and art collector, Paul Mikula. It houses one of the most authentic zulu arts and craft collection. Devoid of any pretentious or superficial western or colonial take on Zulu art, you come face to face with the passion of the man behind the museum. The staff are people who worked and learned with Mikula over 30 years. Art and craft classes like pottery deliberately target rural schools not privileged learners who can afford art lessons. Read moreWe visited Phansi museum in January 2025. It’s a beautiful place and provides a wonderful experience for learning more about Zulu and other Southern African tribes cultures. There are lots of artifacts and curious things to look at and touch, but what made Phansi exceptional was our guide! She made the visit real - dancing to some drummers beat, recounting her personal experience of the difficult times when moving from rural life to become a city dweller as a child, and explaining the roles of women.
