After taking a shortcut on a dirt road from the previous location, my car looked as if it had just conquered a muddy 4x4 track by the time we arrived. As soon as I opened the door, I was greeted by an enormous Great Dane, eager for attention. It’s funny how some animals seem unaware of their size, and this dog was no exception. We unknowingly arrived just in time for the next guided tour. The guide mentioned something alarming—there has been a significant decline in butterfly species, from around 800 to 600, largely due to the lack of sanctuaries. Interest in and education about butterflies also seems to be fading. I have immense respect for these sanctuaries that are working tirelessly to prevent species from going extinct. Small, transparent display boxes showed the various stages of a butterfly’s life cycle, and I learned that some species are quite particular about the plants they need. Walking through the enclosed space, I quickly realized how even the smallest movements or steps could have an impact. You become hyper-aware of where you place your feet and what you’re doing. Sometimes, we mindlessly walk through nature, unaware that something as simple as breaking a leaf could be causing harm to an embryo or a delicate part of...

An absolutely wonderful experience! The Western Cape Butterfly Sanctuary is a peaceful and beautifully designed place, surrounded by nature and full of life. Earle Whiteley is an outstanding host – warm, incredibly knowledgeable and truly passionate about butterflies and conservation. He shared so many fascinating facts during the tour, from how each species depends on specific plants to the delicate process of breeding and protecting them. You can really feel how much care and dedication goes into every detail here. It’s both relaxing and educational – perfect for families, photographers or anyone who loves nature. I left inspired and deeply impressed by what Earle and his team have created. Highly...

Great family outing at the Butterfly Sanctuary. We unfortunately did not see too many butterflies as it was winter...who knew?! Earl Whitely certainly made up for the lack of butterflies 🦋 with his extensive knowledge and experience with butterflies and building of the sanctuaries. Food was good and well priced for the large portion you get. Owner and staff were very friendly and helpful. We will be...
