Don't recommend the longer route if you're allergic to bees. It may be worth it anyway if you're prepared to run.
The hike over the hilly grasslands surrounding the town was stunning, with a plethora of diverse flora, insects and birds. We took the yellow (10km) route which winds through some very green, lush, thick indigenous forest areas.
Unfortunately, our hike was cut short when we encountered a swarm of angry, wild bees just after "J's Walk". Granted, there was a nicely illustrated sign ("Wild Bees") right by the nest but by the time we'd seen it was too late. My partner was stung on the forehead which made them swarm even more. We had to sprint about 200m back through the forest until we were out of range and fortunately escaped with only a few small stings, mild trauma and a good story.
Note, the bees are sensitive and were unprovoked, but by the time one nears the sign it's probably too close to their nest to safely continue on the trail.
Recommend the trail keepers move the sign further ahead of the hazard and/or make a detour far away...
Read moreThere are 2 trail options: for a shorter route, follow the white feet and the longer route, follow the yellow feet. I did the longer route which ends up at exactly 10km and 320m of elevation. The trail is really well marked and starts in the middle of town outside the Town hall. Watch out at 8.4km: it’s easy to miss the marking and end up on the wrong path, just go right instead of left. This is marked but can be a bit overgrown. A huge climb awaits you at the start but not to worry, this is the worst of it. The trail is maintained by the locals and done out of the love of it so donations are welcomed and can be done at the Foodzone shop about 100m before the...
Read moreEasy to find. You can park at the Magoebas Kloof Hotel, and any staff member will point you in the direction of the start of the trail.
The trail is short, but it does have a few steep bits. But if you take it slow, and rest a bit, it's doable.
I would not reccomend this trail shortly after it rained. We went on a bright sunshiny day, and even then it was slippery.
The route is clearly marked. At each crossroad, there is a clear map with directions.
The trail itself is very beautiful. It feels like you're in a different world. At times it felt like we're in Jurassic park.
I would...
