The Old One of Tsitsikamma

Deep in the forest, hushed and wide, Where shadow and sunlight softly collide, A giant waits with patient grace— The Big Tree stands in its sacred place.

Outeniqua elder, centuries old, With bark like stories, roots like gold. Over 800 years it grew, Through storm and drought and morning dew.

You walk the boardwalk, breath held tight, As forest whispers guide your sight. The hush is deep, the air is clean, And then—you see what time has seen.

It towers not in boastful pride, But calm and still, with life inside. A monument of leafy peace, Where thoughts expand and troubles cease.

Birdsong echoes in cathedral green, Among the oldest you’ve ever seen. And for a moment, you feel small— But not diminished—part of it all.

A gentle walk, an ancient friend, Where past and present sweetly blend. No thrill ride here, no rush, no fee— Just reverence...

Going to view the Big Tree at Tsitsikama is worth the trip. All roads as well as the parking area is paved, and the area is nice and clean. The fee for the permit to go view the tree is relatively inexpensive and if you are a Wild Card holder entrance is free. There are 3 different walking trails of varying distances, all leading to the Big Tree. The standard route is about 1km in total with the first half winding through the forest on beautiful and well maintained wooden path ways. The Big Tree is massive and makes for awesome photos, and the forest surrounding it is lush and green. When we visited they were also busy building what looked like a restaurant / info center so that is something to look out for...

We did the orange hiking path the big tree so big you gotta look up 90° amazing the hiking you gotta take drinking water and good hiking shoes there are mud and where good comfortable clothes and if you get fast tired take a hiking stick with. The forest is so clean and when you start the hike you start at the yellow then you can go further to the red if you wish yellow is about 2.6 km hike easy 60 min because of the terrain and when you stand at the start of the yellow trail there a big box open it up and fill in the page in the book and take the paper because that's youre free one day license to hike its for if you come across the anty poucher let you show you hike...

A recommended place to go to if you are staying or travelling through the garden route. The big tree had been renovated recently so the facilities are much better now compared to how it was many years ago. It’s got many trails as well for hikers to explore. Some trails are on built wooden bridges and panels. Some trails are in the wild amongst trees, bushes and passing small river streams. It’s really nice because there’s no set paths, so you may choose your trail depending on distance and difficulty. An entrance fee is required, I think it was R35-50 per person and I spent about 3-5 hours here. A very refreshing hike because the trees provide shade against the sun and heat.
