Amazing experience. Large aviaries with a wide variety of birds, both exotic and indigenous. Most birds and animals are rescues and are obviously well cared for. Amazing to see African Grey parrots in real flight. This is achieved by placing them in a huge aviary. Several breeding pairs of the South African national bird, Blue Crane. At least one pair of Cape Parrots. I would have liked to have more identification markers at the different enclosures and back stories on the back stories of the rescued animals. Like the magestic Secretary bird without feet. On a hot day the walk through can be strenuous, especially for older visitors, but there are ample spots available available to rest, braai or picnic. African Dawn has a fully licensed restaurant and an optional game game drive that can be under taken with an ordinary road car along well maintained gravel roads. Well worth the visit. Go for a whole day and make...
Read moreThis was truly a magical day. Birds of every species including my favorite Kookaburras!!! The colours and the sounds. It took us ages to walk round the entire sanctuary and we loved every minute. Then we were treated to a very yummy toasted sandwich by the warm and friendly staff. After lunch we set off on our game drive. What a treat. Buck of every kind and description. Baby buck. Too cute for words. Baby zebra. And giraffe. My day was complete. We shall definitely be heading back to African Dawn in the very near future with the rest of the family. Next time we intend to.pack a picnic and braai done qors and make a day of it. I highly recommend this for a nice...
Read moreI get the impression that the birds, and the few animals that we saw (we focused on birds) were not there for rehabilitation and eventual release but rather that they had been taken from their natural habitats and placed into enclosures on display for human entertainment. The snakes (reptiles) in particular are in glass boxes with little fresh air and very little that would resemble their natural environments. We came away feeling sad for the animals and birds. No wild animal or bird should be caged unless its for a period of...
