My wife and I stayed a few nights at the lighthouse. They have opened the tender’s quarters for overnight stays. It’s affiliated with restaurant “Never Mind” which sits adjacent to the property. The Good -The people that run this property are just so kind and accommodating. The entire staff never stopped smiling and always tried to get whatever we requested. They really looked like they enjoyed what they were doing. A different level of service. -The area is visually breathtaking. The ocean, the beaches, the walking trails. All were very pleasant. -The neighboring town St Francis had everything you could need and even had some shopping venues. -The kitchen facilities allowed for cooking, storing food, and all the cooking / food prep supplied if you choose to eat in. -The restaurant food was tasty and well thought thru. Breakfast and dinner all had dishes that were unique with a mix for different palates. The questionable -Staying at the lighthouse is questionable for the different seasons. All of the windows are the original windows from 1910. About the best job they do is keep the driving rain out. No central air. No central heat. They did have a space heater, that luckily we didn’t need. -Don’t drink the water out of the tap. -the condition of the facility I would call rustic with partially restored conditions. Due to the interior and my knowledge of construction practices, including historic restorations, the paint peeling of the walls and mold growing in various rooms, it made me a little nervous. This condition is not disclosed in their publication , but as of the date we were there, it existed. Paint throughout the early 1900s had lead and asbestos. Everyday paint chips and dust was on everything. Luggage, towels, and dishes. Conclusion I would stay a night for the experience, but not a...
Read moreWonderful outing. Friendly people. R60 per person to go to the top of the lighthouse. Pet friendly lighthouse. I am not sure if our pup is the first doggie to venture to the top, but feels cool to think so. Please note that the metal "staircases" are more like ladders as the steps are small, narrow and steep. The lighthouse is 28 metres high. There was a market selling clothing, jewellery, candles and more. Everything at the market is extremely expensive but beautiful. The market space is very cramped with lots of people. They state that they close at 14:30 but there were still a lot of people who came in. Times probably differ in the...
Read moreAlways love climbing a lighthouse and this was no exception. Stunning views. Note: very narrow and very steep stairs to climb, not good of anyone has mobility or vertigo issues Re the "tour": R60 per person. The booklet and info as you climb up is much more informative than the 2 very unexcited young staff who clearly didn't want to take us on a "tour". The one reluctantly took us up. He was friendly enough but clearly both of them made no effort to learn history of the Lighthouse other than the basics. This is the only reason for not...
