The Free State National Botanical Garden in Bloemfontein is an absolute treasure! This 70-hectare sanctuary, filled with vibrant indigenous flora like fynbos and succulents, is a nature lover’s dream. The well-maintained trails lead through serene woodlands and grasslands, with stunning views of the dam and koppies. Highlights like the San rock art replica and medicinal garden add a unique touch, while the colorful birdlife brings the place to life. Perfect for a peaceful walk or family outing, especially in spring when the blooms are spectacular. The staff are friendly, and the affordable entry makes it a must-visit!

After exploring, the Orchid House Tea Garden is the ideal spot to unwind. Nestled in the garden’s greenery, this cozy tearoom serves delicious light meals, fresh pastries, and superb coffee. The scones are a highlight, and the warm service makes it even better. With affordable prices and a tranquil vibe, it’s the perfect way to cap off a visit. Highly recommend this gem for anyone seeking nature and relaxation in one...

This is a beautiful stop in Bloemfontein, without which Bloemfontein would definitely be missing something. With open lawns, scent garden, bird hide and a great home up the mountain, this place is an inviting Paradise for all seasons. The hike as a bit of history to it and had a beautiful view from the top, the lake is a great place to sit when it's raining season and this place is full of picnic activity during summer weekends. The restaurant has great food and excellent service, and the bathrooms are always clean. They even have great braai facilities and spaces for weddings and casual outdoor indabas. Ask about the movie outdoor movie nights they hold — they are an experience not...

Serenely tranquil. Restaurant has limited menu but boy oh boy you have to try the smoked chicken salad.

Smell the fresh air whilst watching a few birds in the reeds and some larger birds in the dam.

For the more adventurous and energetic amongst us, there are a few hiking trails that will get the heart pumping and the face sweating.

Overall a wonderful experience for nature lovers or someone just needing a break from the hustle and bustle and rustle of city life.

Some even have small weddings and occasions like birthday and baby shower celebrations. Special catering for the occasions.

Have not tried the Sunday buffet yet, but a little birdie tells me...

This is a gorgeous place to visit any time of the year in my opinion, beautifully maintained. This is smaller botanical garden compared to the others however it has more wildlife and birds viewing than any other botanical garden in the country. It's an absolute must for bird lover, there a beautiful birdhide hut on the lakeside with seats and viewing windows with gorgeous views of the dam and the mountains. The entry fee for adults is R30, there is also a restaurant inside, one can grab quick snack and water points all over the park. The is a shaded garden and traditional village houses, very beautiful and a must to find during your walk around the park.

I was at the garden on the 21st of August 2025, relaxing with my fiance, when Botanical garden employee started lawn mowing the grass with a tractor that was making a lot of dust to the nearby we were sitting on. I found it very unprofessional, inconsiderate and disrespectful for the fact that he didn't let us know that he's going to cut the grass, and we should maybe shift from we're currently sitting. He didn't consider letting us know, he just started the machine and didn't care whether the dust is coming towards us or not. But I would give the place a 5 star, I love it's serenity, tranquility and such a peaceful place. Thank you.

The gardens are very well maintained and the staff are very friendly and the ablutions are clean. There are nice hiking trails and a really nice restaurant with good food and nice service. Packing your own snacks and a blanket is just as nice though. There is enough space for many people to have nice picnics on weekends. There are nice benches and lots of trees also available. The entrance fee is not a problem to pay at all when you can see that it is being utilized effectively. This is an excellent venue for photographers doing photo shoots for people!
