My Heart-Stirring Visit to an Elephant Rescue Centre From the moment I set foot at Elephant Whispers, I felt a wave of excitement and anticipation. I had heard stories, watched documentaries, and read about these magnificent creatures, but nothing could have prepared me for the deep connection I felt during my visit. Elephants—those gentle giants—are far more than just the imposing animals I once thought them to be. They are intelligent, passionate, and full of life, and they completely stole my heart. As I watched them move, interact, I was struck by their intelligence. Every glance, every movement seemed purposeful. It was clear they were thinking deeply, showing emotions, and engaging with others in ways that truly humbled me. Their complex social structures and ability to communicate with one another was awe-inspiring. It made me realize how much more we, as humans, still have to learn from these incredible animals. But what truly captivated me were their eyes. There was something so ancient and wise in their gaze, as if each elephant's eyes held centuries of stories—stories of survival, loss, joy, and wisdom passed down through generations. It was impossible to look into those eyes without feeling the weight of their experiences. You could see the history, the battles fought, and the bonds formed in those quiet moments of connection. Their eyes spoke a language all their own, one that words could never fully capture. The staff at the centre were equally impressive. They were not just caretakers but true advocates for the elephants, sharing a wealth of knowledge with visitors and providing personalized care to each elephant. Their passion and love for the animals were evident in everything they did. The way they spoke about the elephants with such admiration made it clear they were not just doing a job—they were committed to making a difference in the lives of these majestic creatures. What struck me most was the bond between the staff and the elephants. There was an undeniable trust and respect that had clearly been built over time, and it was something I couldn’t help but admire. Visiting the centre was a life-changing experience. I left with a deeper appreciation for elephants, their intelligence, and their profound emotional depth. It reminded me of the importance of supporting these centres and the incredible work they do to rehabilitate and care for animals that have been exploited or harmed. We can all make a difference—whether it's by supporting such centre's , spreading awareness, or simply choosing to respect and protect these incredible beings. Their eyes tell stories that deserve to be heard, and it’s up to...

Our party (a family group ranging in age from 6 to 70+) was booked for elephant interactions + ride (many others didn't do the ride). I was expecting a lot more riding and less of the "interactions" part. We were part of a group of over 50 people (!), which included a whole tour group of Italian tourists (30+). Basically, we spent about an hour and a half listening to explanations about elephants, their eating and activity patterns, etc. (which, to be fair, also included some touching and photo ops with the elephant). For the first half, the entire group was together, and the guide for the Italian group was translating (very loudly!) everything the Elephant Whispers host was saying, making it difficult to hear the explanations. Then they split us up into the Italian group on the one hand, and our "smaller" group (which was still some 20 people) on the other, for more "interactions" and explanations with a single (very large) elephant.

It's not that what was being explained to us wasn't interesting (because it was!), but the size of the group made the experience rather unpleasant -- every photo op took a long time, as we had to wait for every group/individual to go up to the elephant, touch it, and pose for their photo...

When that part was done, we finally got to the riding part. Here, only our family group and 2 other girls remained. But what I thought was going to be the highlight of this whole experience turned out to be a 10-min walk in a large circle (reminiscent of pony rides for kids at the zoo), with multiple people sitting on an elephant behind a guide (they only have 6 elephants all in all) -- there were 5 of us (my wife and I + our 3 kids) behind the groom on Timbo, the largest of their elephants (a 3.5-meter, 6-ton African giant -- quite impressive!).

I would have been much happier with a smaller group (no more than 10), a shorter "interaction" section (half an hour would largely suffice, especially if the group were smaller), and a much longer ride, one-on-one (not with several other people on the same elephant).

All in all, I'm glad we had this experience, but I have to deduct some points from the rating for all the negative aspects...

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience at Elephant Whispers

Our visit to Elephant Whispers was nothing short of extraordinary — a perfect blend of education, emotion, and awe-inspiring moments that will stay with us forever.

A very special thank you goes to Kwagga and the entire Elephant Whispers team for creating such a warm, welcoming, and unforgettable experience. Kwagga’s passion, knowledge, and genuine love for the elephants were evident in every moment. His storytelling, sense of humor, and deep respect for these gentle giants made the experience even more meaningful.

Being up close with the elephants was truly humbling. We had the incredible opportunity to touch, feed, and walk with them — a magical connection that words can hardly capture. These elephants are clearly loved and well cared for, and the bond between them and their handlers is heartwarming to witness.

The entire team at Elephant Whispers is exceptional — professional, compassionate, and deeply committed to conservation and education. They ensured we were safe, informed, and inspired throughout the visit.

If you're in the area, do not miss this incredible experience. It’s not just a tourist attraction — it’s a powerful, soul-touching encounter that leaves you with a deeper respect for wildlife and the people who dedicate their lives to protecting it.

Thank you, Kwagga and the team, for giving us memories that will last a lifetime. We’ll be talking about this for...

This was on my Mpumalanga Bucket list and so glad I got to visit ! I booked a while in advance for an Elephant Interaction and Ride but the day before there was some confusion about my time and a mix-up with a person of the same name as me - that was thankfully sorted out though. The lady at the register and taking payments seemed quite unfriendly, arrogant and as though she didn't want to be there and didn't want us there either. We felt very looked down upon and almost as though it were a racial issue ( I won't let that affect my overall rating though as it was just one person) - not the kind of attitude I'd expect at all. It kind of left a sour taste in our mouths but we tried to remember that we're there for the Elephants. The Elephant education with Tom and interactions were AMAZING ! The Elephant handlers were all so friendly and up to date with the latest technology and taking of pictures and video's. And let's not forget the Elephants- MAGNIFICENT! SO so well trained and it's honestly such a privilege to be able to interact with them. We could not do an Elephant Ride though as it was drizzling and could result in a slip or accident - I was naturally disappointed but I totally understand why. There is a little Curios shop on the premises as well. Bathrooms were very clean. If ever in the area again, I'd love to book a Ride again!

The experience we had with the Elephants was out of this world. I have no words that can explain how magnificent the they were. It was amazing being able to feed, touch and explore around Thembo. He is such a gentle soul. To have this feeling of a 6 ton 3.5 meter beast hovering over you and know that he is as soft as a teddy bear is one of the most unbelievable & unforgettable experiences that any single person could ever experience. The trainers and staff are so knowledgeable of these giants that we will need to return again this time to concentrate on the knowledge they share and not miss most if it as we gaze apon Thembo in awe. These magnificent animals are only one if the reasons why we as people need to learn and conserve all animals for future generations yet to come. We cannot thank you enough for the mindblowing experience that you have given us and will return to see you in the future. If you ever need volunteersto help please let us know we will be more than willing to assist in any way. All our very best wishes. John & Ashleigh
