I use to love going to Walkhaven as it was always a safe place for my dog and friends dogs to go and have fun Since it has gained in popularity the experience has GREATLY declined!!
Yesterday (29 Sp 24') when I was there. I saw a fight between 4 Pitbulls with 3 Pitbulls ganging up on 1 Pitbull. I had a similar experience with these 3 pitbulls with my small dog not 5min before this incident happened. I was lucky enough to get my small dog away who would have been ripped to shreds if they got hold of him.
On leaving, I saw a Boston Terrier trying to attack a Boer bull who was very placid with leash on and the owner had him under control and did not antagonise the Boston Terrier in anyway. A vendor then proceeded to joke and make a loud statement saying "a Boston Terrier trying to attack a Boer bull" with everyone laughing about it. This is not on, instead the owners should be reprimanded for this type of behaviour and not brushed aside or made light of
On leaving the park, 2 staffies were running riot at the entrance. They tried to attach a staffie who was on his leash very calm and placid. The owner of the 2 staffies was too busy arguing and trying to justify his dogs actions to the owner of the staffie who was being attacked. The 2 staffies then continue to run riot by the entrance trying to attack more dogs trying to get in. They were then allowed into the park??? How is that even possible???
Having to pay R45 entrance you would think that seeing these types of things that some form of check or limitation on who is being allowed into the park would take place. As soon as people arrive their dogs are let off their leads and run straight into the park and are not controlled by their owners. Instead rather focusing on socialising or heading off to the restaurant and not over seeing their dogs whatsoever
The park has significantly declined, there are no staff members on hand to oversee the overall park in case something happens. Their is a lack of first aid on hand. Again, you have a dog park and yes things do happen, but you would think they would have someone who is qualified enough to provide treatment
I will never go here ever again and I will encourage everyone who I know that goes here to never go again and anyone who asks me about Walkhaven to...
Read moreWalkhaven Dog Park is a wonderful place to spend the day with your pup. It not only offers great pet friendly facilities for the family but it also has great little trails and dams to walk with your dog (dams are not for fishing or swimming - only dogs can swim). I would definitely pack some gumboots if you plan on braving the muddy areas but most of the park one can access in normal sneakers. The park is well maintained with braai facilities for those wanting to spend the day braaing, a beautiful restaurant with fantastic pizza and it is always well maintained and clean. The owners are also very friendly and accommodating. One of the best features of the park is that it has the great dog wash team. Martin and his team are friendly and really go all out to make the pups feel comfortable with the wash, dry and brush and it's all done in front of you, so if pup is feeling a bit nervous, you can be with them through the entire process. I love this dog wash team they have and its one of the main reasons, not the only reason but definitely a great addition to why I am drawn to Walkhaven. (Dog wash is only at the park on Saturdays and Sundays but there are places for pup to wash off if it's during the week days too.)
The park and the dog wash are reasonably priced too so if you have more than one pup, it makes it more affordable - they have various pay options too, if you dont carry cash for the trust box (if the hut is closed), you can use zapper and other payment options even. So not only do you get to have a great day out with your family (Walkhaven is our favourite place and absolutely awesome!) but you get to spend it with your pups too. Lastly because of the dog wash, you get to make sure that after all that fun in the dams and the mud, our pups get to go home clean. We absolutely love Walkhaven, with all its features, its beauty and its dog wash team and highly reccommend it to anyone wanting to make a day out of it with their...
Read moreI was extremely excited to take my dog to this park. It looks amazing in the photos and has great reviews. However, as an off-leash park, it is not up to standard with the people that visit. If you are visiting an off-leash park and let your dog off leash you should have control over your pet and more than that understand a little about canine behavior. There was a Large German Shepherd that attacked a dog that will surely need stitches, the owners were not asked to leave and then what was more shocking is that the owner with the injured dog actually stayed to get food and on the way out 3 other dogs moved in on her and her dog, at least those owners had control of their pets. An injured dog needs to be removed from the facility as this makes him or her the weakest link and can surely end up causing major issues with other dogs around. My girl loved the open space and swimming and the restaurant was great, after my meal I decided to take her swimming one more time. Got to the bottom and once again people that should not be there! A couple playing with their pitbull (love pit bulls not demonizing the breed) the owner directly said I need to keep my dog away so he can continue swimming and playing, his words on why- “He has never bitten a dog and held on, but he is very protective of his toy tire and my dog swimming and wanting to play could cause him to react aggressively ”. What the actual!? Why are you here then? Irresponsible owners are the reason why off-leash and even on-leash dog parks are a big no-no in the dog training society. A park this busy needs more attentive people making sure where there are problems arising to avoid pets and owners missing out on a joyous experience. It is beautiful and my girl loved it, but unfortunately due to these reasons, I will not be going back...
