This was our getaway for 2 glorious nights in the Kogelberg Nature Reserve between Betty's Bay and Kkeinmond. The Palmiet River was flowing beautifully after good rains in August.. On day 2 of our stay we did a 11km gentle loop going up the jeep track and coming back along the Palmiet River. Such amazing mountain views, streams, waterfalls and spring flowers We did a lunch stop at the "Beach" - dipped our toes in the cold water. You can go in for a day visit with your Wild Card or pay the Reserve Fee. We didn't get to see any buck on that day but we were pleasantly visited by a gennet that evening at the lodge. The Eco Lodges were just amazing to stay in and they are so well insulated and well ventilated. The waterless Loo is a first for me and there is truly no stink whatsoever - just make sure you keep the fan on all the time. This is one of the best nature reserves that we have stayed in and we loved our stay, especially as it is only an hour and a half from Cape Town - so for us that's a huge bonus. Kkeinmond is about 2kms away - some lovely restaurants there if you didn't feel like cooking. I almost didn't want to share so I could keep this our secret Getaway. The one criticism I do have is that there was no...

Turn off the R44 near Kleinmond and take a 3km ride into paradise! Safely park your car and register for your hike - several options available so check and plan your route before arrival. It's a Cape Nature Reserve so fees apply...we paid R60pp. Staff are very friendly and helpful.
The Palmiet River walk is clearly demarcated and relatively easy, with a little clambering here and there. The trail is mostly sandy. Rocks could be slippery at places, so good shoes are recommended. If you walk about 3.8km along the trail, you will come across a beach on the right - a popular spot for a swim in the refreshing russet water and a welcome rest and snack. This used to be signposted but no more, so keep an eye out for the fork off to the right.
The full walk in and out is about 10km. With the stops for a swim, and to admire the views and vegetation, plan to spend 4-6 hours in this special place. Views are incredible. The peace indescribable. Food for the soul.
Kogelberg also offers accommodation....their ecopods are fabulous. There is also a mountain bike trail. Again, check the website for more...
Read moreOne of the most beautiful nature reserves within South Africa, offering various types of sustainable accommodation and hiking routes.
Regarding accommodation, there are multiple self catering units from 2, 4 and 6 sleepers. These are strategically placed across the reserve to ensure each unit obtains unobstructed views of the beautiful scenery. The units are equipped with all your essentials, while being completely sustainable through systems such as the compostable toilet, solar PV panels, induction hob and energy efficient lighting. The only point of criticism with the units or cabins is that they do require some further maintenance on the exposed timber elements.
There is no wifi nor signal within the reserve, thus it allows you to completely switch off without any distractions from the city life chaos.
Hiking routes are offered for both guests day visitors. Offering views of the rolling mountains across all angles. The hikes are clearly marked and are of varying inclines and intensity levels, catering for all ages.
I’d highly recommend Kogelberg for a perfect getaway to unwind and connect...
