Our recent visit left us spellbound by the sheer beauty and ethereal ambiance of this majestic waterfall. The aesthetic beauty of Lisbon Falls extended beyond its grandeur. Read moreThis is one of several waterfalls you can stop to see as part of the Panorama Route drive in the Mpumalanga Highlands of South Africa. It is named after the Portuguese miners who panned for gold here in the late 1800s.
You'll find the Lisbon Falls 2 km down a turnoff road off of R532, around 5 km south of the Berlin Falls. Entry is R15 per adult. Opening hours are 8pm to 5pm. There is a small carpark with a handful of curio stalls. There are toilet facilities and a car park attendant on site.
The falls are just behind he curio stands and there are a couple viewpoints to enjoy. What you will see is a tall 94 metre falls as well as a small riverbed below. During our October visit, the water was flowing decently providing fair volume of falling water. Lisbon Falls is nice to see but less impressive to nearby Berlin Falls.
If you have to choose between the two, I'd suggest going with the Berlin Falls. However, if you have time to see both, its worth a quick 10 minute stop to see the Lisbon...
Read moreThis waterfall demands attention and I strongly feel it becomes worth it when you take a hike to base. It is not necessary to do but you don't experience it in all its glory any other way.
The viewing point is just a few short steps from your car but the hike is a good 15 min each way. (I found it slightly quicker due to the fact that I am young and fit) but some other people would say around 30 min each way. The hike is steep and not easy on the way back but again, SO WORTH IT.
This is a good stop to meet a lot of international tourists too which makes it more enjoyable. Be careful when you get to the base as the winds pick up substantially from the force of the water but you can swim in the base pool. The rocks are slippery too so proceed with caution but an awesome place to take pictures and spend time in...
