Although I had agreed to do the zipline with my friends before our trip, I was never comfortable with the idea due to my intense height phobia. In fact, I spent the night before going through the reviews in the hope of finding comfort in the experience of people with the same phobia.
I'm sharing my experience for the benefit of those like me.
Our lead guide, Brendon, was a super trooper who made everyone feel at ease and relaxed. Brendon and his two guides made us feel very safe every step of the way. They were very patient and allowed me to take off whenever I am ready and not rushed me into it.
Because my intense fear of height, I only stopped hesitating on my jump towards the end. But the faxt that I still continued is to the guides' credit. By tbe way, the point oc no return is at the 2nd jump - you could decide not to continue at that point. Also, you can do tandem zipline with a guide if you prefer.
I had the 'bonus thrill' of not successfully landing at the 9th lind and even slid back by a long distance. Ond of the guides -I forgot his name but that's him in the photo - had to rescue me as I was too scared to find my way back. So big thanks to all the guides!
Net net, even if you have height phobia but vaguely think you can give it a go, then do! Know that you can always opt fod tandem zipline with a...
Read morePoorly maintained platforms, with wobbly railings, negligent staff, dangerous road up to start, are all reasons I would warn anyone NOT to do this. Our one guide was more focused on filming us than safety and forgot to place his own runner on the cable, he jumped off the platform only tethered with the two safety carabiners, worse was he was responsible for a 5 year old child, and was hanging off her along the 2nd longest zip line. The other guide had to leave the remaining group alone to then go and rescue the guide and child. Even then the negligent guide didn’t learn and didn’t pay attention when we slid towards him. Other zip line companies have mechanical brakes to slow one down, at cape canopy you had to do it with a gloved hand. I hurt my arm & shoulder doing this. As there are no seat safety belts in the 4X4, driving up & down the mountain required continuous bracing and sliding off the seat knocking knees against the seat in front, an extremely dangerous road and very poorly maintained. They also did not keep to the website stated restrictions of late arrivals, which meant those of us who planned and arrived with plenty of time, had to wait a further 30min to accommodate the late arrivals. All in all a very dangerous and poorly managed...
Read moreA truly wonderful facility, from start to finish three of us turned up with my mum who waited patiently while we did a zip wire experience, from the start the welcome was warm, welcoming and enthusiastic by the administration team. To the wonderful guides and safety experts who looked after from the bottom to the top and back down to the bottom, myself affectionately, called big daddy,, my wife, Clare who the guys chaperoned and was her very own Uber, zip wire, maestros, and our friend Sue, this really was one of the highlights of our three-month trip in South Africa a big special shout out has to go to the charismatic, funny and enthusiastic guides Luwayne (Wayne) Shameel(Gummy . In the background and on the trip back, the very warmhearted head of health and safety and maintenance, whose name I didn’t get his name was a great ambassador of great assurance that safety was paramount.
All these guys are a credit to the industry and are a beacon to South African tourism.
Thank you to these very special people and a very special...
