We hiked the 10.5km trail at the Groenkloof Nature Reserve. This trail goes up immediately, with a 260+ meter elevation gain, and it loops. It took us almost 4 hours to complete. There was no rush, and mid-hike, we took a proper rest. You are looking at R58 pp for the hike. Along the trail, you notice the dry air. It’s wintertime, after all. High up the trail, there was tree cover and some greenery in some places. The open areas were pale and dusty. We were lucky enough to see some wildlife along the trail. We encountered Zebras, an Ostrich, and a Giraffe, an unexpectedly lovely addition to the hike. There was a container shop managed by the owner where you could buy food and drinks. She offered snacks, muffins, sodas, coffee, and tea, and I remember seeing a few beers in the fridge. Having a cold beer after a hike is always welcome. 🍻 The Groenkloof Nature Reserve has a lot to offer: hiking and mountain biking trails, 4x4 trails, a picnic area, a child-play area, horse riding, etc. It's a great place to spend a day in nature. That is it for a brief review. I hope this inspires you to hike at the Groenkloof Nature Reserve. For more things worth doing and places worth seeing. Check out ThinkAdventure.guide

This is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Pretoria, offering a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. As one of the oldest game reserves in Africa, Groenkloof boasts a rich diversity of flora and fauna against the backdrop of picturesque landscapes. The reserve's well-maintained trails provide the perfect opportunity for hiking, cycling, and wildlife viewing. My recent 10 km hike through Groenkloof allowed me to immerse myself fully in its natural splendor. From meandering through lush vegetation to ascending rocky outcrops, each step offered a new adventure and a deeper connection with nature. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the abundance of avian species that call Groenkloof home, while nature enthusiasts can marvel at the variety of plant life that flourishes in this protected sanctuary. But Groenkloof is more than just a nature reserve—it's a place of tranquility and rejuvenation. The peaceful ambiance, punctuated only by the sounds of birdsong and rustling leaves, makes it the perfect spot for a leisurely stroll, a picnic with loved ones, or simply a moment of quiet reflection.

Nice nature reserve in Pretoria. Apparently the first proclaimed nature reserve in Africa. My son and I did the 10.5 km trail and it took us 3.5 hours (I’m so fit so this included rest stops of around 20 minutes) I would rate the trail as moderate - at the start is a bit climb and then you descend onto a contour path. At the 8km mark there’s another climb and from here on the path is rocky so it’s slower going. We saw zebra, ostriches and a sable antelope. Sunblock and good hat are essential as there’s little shade for most of the walk. Take your own refreshments and food as there’s no place to buy them in the reserve. The parking lot is small so go early. The picnic spots are well equipped with tables, braai stands and water taps.

I planned a special birthday surprise for my partner at Groenkloof Nature Reserve, based on their website which clearly states that no booking is required for horse riding. Wanting to double-check, I called their main number over 20 times in the week leading up to our visit – including the weekend and the very morning of – and no one answered. Not once.

We decided to go anyway, only to be told on arrival that bookings are required and we must speak to the horse handlers. Fine. We walk toward the stables and see two guys working on an old VW with the bonnet up. Naturally, we didn’t think they were staff – they looked like visitors fixing their car. We waited around the horses, looking for actual staff members, until someone eventually pointed us back to those same guys.

I approached them politely, but was met with immediate hostility and rudeness. They were upset that we hadn’t greeted them (even though we were far away initially) and carried on about it for way too long. I remained friendly, explained that it was my partner’s birthday and we were just trying to plan a nice experience, but their attitude only got worse.

Every question I asked – whether they needed my contact details, what the horses’ names were, etc. – was treated like a stupid question. They kept speaking to each other in another language, laughing and ignoring us. It was clear they had zero interest in customer service and even less in making anyone feel welcome.

They told me my partner would “fall off the horse” and were just generally condescending and smug. I apologized multiple times trying to keep the peace – purely because we still wanted to go on the ride – but honestly, it was humiliating. At one point, I asked the names of the horses, and they mocked me, laughed, and walked away.

Luckily, the horse ride itself was actually enjoyable – thanks to the horses, not the staff. But those two men completely ruined the start of what was supposed to be a special day. They were unnecessarily rude, dismissive, and made us feel like we were bothering them for simply trying to enjoy a service the website advertises.

If Groenkloof Nature Reserve wants people to enjoy their experience and return, they should seriously reconsider who they allow to interact with customers. These two individuals were not only unprofessional – they were a downright embarrassment to the establishment. Won’t be recommending this place to anyone unless they get their...

I throughly enjoyed myself here. Mostly because we got to see Zebras at a very close range and walked between them. That was an exciting experience. The trail itself tends to be too rocky and a lot of climbing on the last 3 kilometres. The trail direction signs need to be repainted as some are almost completely washed off. There are some beautiful, peaceful open views where the fresh clean air brushes you as you walk and stop a bit to take it all in. We also saw wildebeest and an Ostrich family complete with parents and babies. It was actually the first time I saw baby Ostriches ever! We walked behind them for about 500 metres because they insisted on using the pathway and we did not want to get too close to be a possible threat to a mother of small chicks. We all know that is when animals are most dangerous or defensive. We definitely can't outrun an ostrich and Ostriches are known to kick. So that was scary but also exciting adding to the colourful experience we had. Also note that the map shoes resting places and we expected to find a table and benches under trees but there is no sign of any area being designated for resting. Therefore we believe that the map is just suggesting those places to you. You will decide whether you stand and drink water, take pictures or sit on the ground. We personally did not make any resting stops. We will definitely be coming back to Groenkloof...
