Magnificent hiking trail 5/5! R100 entrance fee. Opens at 8am and closes at 5pm. Situated 50km from Johannesburg.
I decided to do the 10km Krokodilberg Trail. It's filled with so much variety to explore and you'll find markings everywhere so you'll never get lost.
You'll immediately be greeted by a beautiful flowing river. Continue hiking and you'll find a tiny cave with an incredible lookout point. Kees lookout is also beautiful and if u climb up the rocks you'll find natural shade where u can relax and enjoy the view. There's also a wobbly suspension bridge crossing a river and a cable car that you need to ride in order to get across the river at the end.
You'll also find so many different insects and birds along the way. The massive and dry open bushveld looks beautiful against the blue sky.
Keep in mind, if you're hiking here in Spring/Summer, the sun is going to be rather brutal at certain parts of the hike as you'll be hiking completely exposed with no shade. Good hiking shoes with ankle support are highly recommended as some of the terrain can get rather treacherous. Make sure you've got water, stay hydrated! There's also some challenging ascents and descents. The hike itself is moderately challenging if you've been keeping active, otherwise if you haven't been training you are going to struggle.
Depending on how you want to explore, it can take about 3 hours to finish. If you're lucky you might see Kudu but I didn't see any. I highly recommend this trail it's amazing! It's one of...
Read moreOne of my all time favorite hiking venues. I have visited this place for the last 4 or so years and never had any bad experiences. It is always safe, the paths clearly marked and kept clean and accessible. During covid the swimming pools werent available to use and after heavy rains some of the bridges have been relocated. I just personally miss the hospital cave and I've told many people of it but I am unsure how to access it after the rains. There is ample clean toilets and an awesome restaurant area where cold drinks, home made ginger beer and sandwhiches can be purchased. They have card facilities and you pay R100 per person for entrance. You also get a clearly marked map of the area with 3 or 4 different trails to walk. My favorite is the 10km. At the halfway mark on the 10km there is an escape route that warns it gets more difficult for the last 5km, but is well worth the rocky climb. There is no water points on the hike only at the entrance so i would recommend filling up with enough water. I believe the venue itself says bring 2litres of water per person during the hikes. Another favorite of mine is the little "cart" you can sit in and pull yourself across the river as well as a beautiful bridge to watch the river flowing underneath you. Definitely a place to go whether you are a beginner or experienced hiker/walker/adventurer. There is also a beautiful historic story on this farm and is shared on the map for you to experience caves and kraals...
Read moreI did the Zebra Trail (5 km) the other day, so this time I went for a 10km hike, and it was a quite challenging route. I prefer to do the hike in the early morning, like 6 a.m. Some shades were there, but some trails were extremely hot☀️. Bring your hat, enough water, and prepare yourself with sunblock. During the summer, they're open from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.
For the 10km (Krokodilberg route), I enjoyed the caves and dolomite mines and how to get down there. It's tough and steep, yes, but that was the fun of it. The scenery was stunning, mainly at the view points, as was the vegetation and the river crossing (except in some areas where the water looked dirty). There were two suspension bridges and a cable car. You might have a chance to see wild animals during the hike, such as zebras, impalas, etc.
Please mind your bum if you want to sit on the rock; they were sharp and might tear your leggings😅.
Well, so far, this is the best hiking place I've known. The trails were well-marked, though you'll get the map before you start anyway.
There's an escape route if you feel like changing your mind. During the hike, I saw some guards around. It comes in handy if someone needs some assistance or help (in some emergency cases or sort of thing).
There's a mini-tuk shop if you happen to need some sandwiches, chocolates, and drinks. The toilets were clean as well.
For the R100 entrance ticket, once you take the Krokodilberg route, it was...
