As I walked along the seemingly endless golden sands of Alkantstrand Beach, I was struck by the tranquility and natural splendor surrounding me. The crashing waves beckoned me into the warm Indian Ocean waters for a refreshing swim. Beautiful beach. Usually busy on weekends. The city has tried to reduce the alcohol and littering issues but more can be done. Nice place to come and spend time by the sea with family, friends or picnic, braai facilities are available. Bathrooms are usually clean. Security could also be improved as there have been reports of vehicles being stolen off the parking lot. Having lived in Richard Bay for 10 years and now living in Joburg, Im disappointed to see that the upkeep of Alkandstrand beach has deteriorated. I hope this changes. The port needs to dredge the harbour mouth and pump sand back onto the main beach. This hasn't happened and there is no beach to sit on at high tide. All water has been shut off due to wastage by the public but there is water and shower facilities available in the bathrooms only. Surfing can be really good when...
