Beautiful fort situated on the hill on the outskirts of escort - it takes you back in time to the war, walking to the canons that over look the little town of Eskort. Beautiful aloes surrounding the fort and face brick walls that are slowly eroding. The road leading to the fort is poorly kept, but that is normal in the area. Good time to go is in the evening when the sun is setting. Absolutely beautiful. A walk down history lane.

Fort Dunford, used during the Anglo boer war, was later used as a school for girls. From about 1981, its status was changed to a museum and the photos of the artifacts are amongst the number of items still to be found in the fort. I suggest that everyone interested in the history of SA, should include this fort as one of the places to visit.

How sad to visit one of our countries historical sites to find it in utter ruins and not looked after. Unable to enter and nobody in sight but a security guard living in the industrial display building, eating and offering no assistance to enter any of the museum buildings.

What a sad visit this was! The Fort was locked, even though it was supposed to be open. Someone (staff I assume) peaked at us from the side building and just ignored us further. The toilets was disgustingly dirty and everything just run down and not looked after. The wagon under cover is not maintained and there wont be much left of it in a few years. Sad that the back buildings are broken down, and taken over by the local people, rubbish everywhere in the rubble. Surely a historical building like this can be more looked after...

This museum needs some serious attention. Very run down. That being said, I have a particular interest in Dunford which brought me here, and from that point of view I found this site fascinating. Worth a visit if you share this interest (in Dunford) or if you are wanting an insight into early Estcourt and how the colonial and great war (WW1) impacted it and...
