No fees to be paid if you enter through Gate 2. Gate opens at 0800 as per the board, but in Summer I have seen them open at 0730. If you are there before gate opening, the only option is to park on the road, which will definitely attract a parking ticket, so best wait for the gate to open. Entrance to many breathtaking trails with stunning flora. We went to the Tartarus Cave via Amplitheare, this cave is not marked in the map but is an amazing natural wonder. You must know where it is to find it since it's a small hole on the side of the trail with no marking. But inside it's quite big with several passages going into the mountain. (You'd love it if you ever read about Enid Blyton's famous five's adventures). But DO NOT venture inside alone always go with a small group and ensure someone is outside. It has trails leading in almost all directions and you can choice a long, short,easy hike or run. The information board is very helpful. Take a pic before you start. There's Steenberg Peak, Muizenberg Peak, Cave Peak, St James Peak, Kalkbay Peak, Neilly Pond and the Amphitheatre, off course the amazing visit to the Waterfall is the cherry on the cake, especially after heavy rains. There is also a cave one can explore and take a break,relax, lunch, or just sit and take it all in. One can also just walk the Jeep track loop from the main entrance starting point. Sun hat, sunblock, glasses, is a must, there's no shade and can get very windy. The walks are comfortable though they could be better marked, but you generally find your way on the mountain.
The views from High Steenberg or Muizenberg Beacon are wonderful over both Zandvlei and the southern suburbs.
It’s also the start of the short walk to the waterfall.
It can get windy on this side, especially as you get to the top so pack accordingly.
The people (and dogs) you will meet are friendly and it’s not uncommon for strangers to become friends by the end of a hike.
