After the fires took out the pine trees many years ago, some people stopped coming because there was no shade. But the fynbos has grown in quite thick and while it provides less shade I think this is a big improvement. The pines shaded the dam making the water much cooler. These days it's swimmable for longer on the year.

There are not a great number of spots and it can fill up quick but I've seldom seen it full. And you don't really notice other people much. If you don't like overcrowded beaches, you'll love this spot.

There are no life guards on duty but there are large shallow reaches all around the edge.

Cash only. No card facilities at gate. Public toilets available. No kiosks - bring your own refreshments.

Fuller review of the whole reserve available on the Silvermine...

Absolutely amazing!!!! The adventure starts the moment you leave your home. Before you know it you will be drawn in by the natural beauty of the Southern suburbs, with every turn swaying you from side to side, lulling away the weeks stress, and before you know it, you will have arrived at your destination and the view will knock your breath away. Mountains to one side valleys and the iconic city on the other. It has it all if you want to go for a hard hike, relaxing picknick or refreshing dip you won't be disappointed and to top it all of there no mobile reception, allowing you to fully inbrace the natural splender of this little gem. It is advised thou to go in groups on the hiking and biking trails. Ps. take cash, learned this...

Silvermine dam is one of the far south little secrets. Its great for a hike up to Elephants Eye,or take a casual stroll around the dam, picnic and of course swimming in the dam itself. Its a family friendly place and dogs a welcome if you have your dog permit. You can picnic right on the waters edge on grass embankments or on the rocks. No diving into the dam is allowed (strictly forbibben) as there are hidden rocks just below the water surface near the waters edge. You will swim in coca cola coloured warm water surrounded by mountains and bird life.A must visit...
