I had a great time exploring Ansan’s Multicultural Food Street (안산 다문화 음식 거리). My visit was driven by curiosity, and I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Ansan is home to Korea’s largest multicultural commercial district. The Wongok neighborhood, where this food street is located, is home to tens of thousands of non-Koreans, making up approximately 70% of the area’s total population. Beyond just the resident community, the sheer number of visitors highlights the vibrant and dynamic nature of Ansan’s multicultural district. Walking through the area reminded me of Chinatown in San Francisco and New York, as it reflects the resilience and determination of immigrants striving to build a life in a foreign land—much like my own journey in the U.S. The beauty of diversity shines through here, as different cultures and languages blend together in a unique and lively atmosphere. While Korea continues to evolve with advancements in technology, infrastructure, and lifestyle, this kind of cultural diversity is something truly distinctive to me, making my visit to Ansan’s Multicultural Food Street a memorable and meaningful experience. While walking around, we decided to have lunch at Arirang (아리랑) after noticing the large number of diners inside. Later, I discovered that this restaurant is ranked 30th among the top eateries (맛집) in the area. We ordered 설렁탕 and grilled mackerel (고등어 구이). My wife remarked that both dishes were excellent—the fish was incredibly tender, and the 설렁탕 had a rich, authentic flavor. The service was efficient, and the food arrived quickly, which was a plus. The only minor downside was that the bean sprouts were a bit salty, but overall, it was a satisfying and enjoyable meal.

There are many people who came to Korea to get a job from Southeast Asia, and there must be migrant workers who came here dreaming of the Korean dream. Since then, it has come to an era where the word multicultural is often heard, such as multicultural families, multicultural areas, and multicultural food. In particular, Ansan has a lot of industrial complexes, so it is a place where you can properly see multiculturalism.
