If youโ€™re ever in Korea and looking for a quiet but unforgettable stop, Seongnyugul Cave might be your thing. Itโ€™s officially listed as Koreaโ€™s Natural Monument No. 155 and has even been designated a UNESCO Global Geopark. Pretty cool, right?

Now, before you rush in, thereโ€™s something you need to know. This place isnโ€™t for everyone. At the entrance, thereโ€™s a sign that clearly says folks with claustrophobia or similar conditions should think twice before entering. And you should listen. The air gets heavy inside, and the ceilings can get seriously low. Youโ€™ll probably find yourself crouching most of the time, maybe even bumping your head here and there. So dress smart. Women in skirts? Not a good idea. Youโ€™ll want something comfortable, something you donโ€™t mind getting a little dirty.

The cave itself is full of natural formations, like stalactites and stalagmites, carved out over thousands of years. Thereโ€™s a definite sense of wonder down there, but itโ€™s not a guided tour. You walk through on your own, and some parts are dark, slippery, and narrow. Youโ€™ll need to hold the handrail and watch your step. Safety first.

Oh, and itโ€™s a long way down. Nearly 1,000 steps, round trip. Bring water, and if youโ€™re not a fan of walking, maybe sit this one out. But if youโ€™re up for the hike and the tight spaces, youโ€™ll be rewarded with one of the more unique natural experiences Korea has to offer.

Seongnyugul isnโ€™t flashy. Thereโ€™s no light show or music echoing through the cave. Itโ€™s just raw, ancient nature. And honestly, thatโ€™s what makes it...

Only a small part of the cave is open. It only takes 30 minutes to look around. However all the geological features are very interesting and since some parts are a little narrow, it gives you a real sense if adventure. Best if all we saw a real bat roosting, which was a huge thrill for my 9 year old. Also, it's worth noting it's not cold inside like other caves. Perhaps there is...

Perhaps there is geothermal activity.

And honestly, thatโ€™s what makes it special. Enjoy.

Perhaps there is geothermal activity.
