I have a very mixed feeling about the Santan Art Mine Museum. I like the idea of utilizing the old mine facility and miners' dormitory building, however this museum completely lacks the storytelling aspect in their curating. It almost feels like a chaotic warehouse where various items from the old mine were thrown into, along with all sorts of artifacts collected by the previous museum director. I wish they described and explained better the history of the Korean mining industry and the hardship miners went through. So overall, it has much potentials and definitely room for improvement. The Native Art gallery on the premise of the museum could have been interesting as well if it allowed for more space between the artifacts and explained the...

The mine part is not really visible, but for old machinery and statues of miners. The art exhibition is in parts of the supporting building. There weren't anyone who spoke English there (apart from a few words), but it wasn't really needed. They had a small café open where you could buy snacks and drinks. There was also a restaurant, but it was empty. To get there, I walked from Gohan station (1 hour). There was a bus station close by, but timetable only in Korean. I liked the mix of industrial machines and handicraft and if that is your thing, a visit is worth it. But it ate up a lot of time for me...

This is a fun place to visit and learn about the history of the area and step into a not so distant past of coal mining in Gangwon-do. During peak tourist season their cafe and restaurant are open. But even without it's an interesting place to see nodern art and Korean history collide.
