Juwangsan National Park — Attraction in Juwangsan-myeon

Juwangsan National Park is amazing. Of the 10 National Parks I've visited in Korea so far, this one is my second favorite (Hallasan is tough to beat). Juwangsan doesn't get nearly enough attention, likely because it is perhaps the most remote of the national parks. That's a shame, because the scenery here and the hikes found within the park are some of the best you'll find in Korea.

The remoteness of this park means you will be sharing it with far fewer people than you'd expect for a place that's so beautiful. However the remoteness does come with a downside: minimal bus service and difficulty getting cabs. Kakao taxi couldn't find me a taxi despite an hour and a half of trying (while I walked back to the Cheongsong Bus Terminal), and none of the bus routes that headed to Cheongsong (the closest "town" to Juwangsan) seemed to be running on the Saturday I visited in early December. So be warned: if you visit here makes sure you either have a car, visit on a weekday, or have transportation arranged in advance. Otherwise you might be faced with a LONG walk home.

Cheong-Song County(GyeongBuk province) may be a somewhat unfamiliar area to foreigners, but Juwangsan National Park in this region is a must-visit tourist destination in South Korea, listed as a UNESCO Global Geopark. 주왕산국립공원은 주왕산을 중심으로 그 주변에 있는 여러 봉우리들이 어우러진 곳이다. 중심이 되는 주왕산은 산세가 우뚝 솟아 있으며 기암절벽과 특이한 자연경관이 한 폭의 동양화라 할 수 있을 정도로 경치가 빼어난 곳이다. 천년 고찰인 대전사를 비롯하여 아름다운 계곡, 폭포, 산봉우리 등이 잘 알려져 있다. 1976년 3월 30일 우리나라에서 12번째 국립공원으로 지정(건설부 고시 제25호)되었으며, 1979년 5월에 공원관리사무소가 개소하였다. 2011년 6월에 영덕분소가 개소하였고, 2012년 7월에 절골분소가 신설되었다. 지정 면적은 105.595㎢이다.

명칭 유래 주왕산이라는 명칭의 유래에 대해서는 여러 가지 설이 있다. 먼저 중국 진나라의 주왕(周王)이 이곳에 피신하였다는 데에서 유래하였다는 설이 있고, 또 다른 설은 신라시대에 주원왕(周元王: 金周元)이 임금의 자리를 버리고 이곳에서 도를 닦았다는 설이 있다. 주왕산은 암벽이 병풍처럼 둘러쳐 있다는 데에서 신라시대에는...
