This trail within Bukhansan was reopened to the public in 2007, after being closed for decades due to a historical incident involving a North Korean spy who crossed the mountain in an attempt to assassinate the South Korean president. Today, access is limited to 597 trekkers per entrance (there are two) each day. While admission is free, online reservations are required in advance.
The trail is stunningly beautiful, with pristine nature untouched by pollution. Uiryeong-gil—named because its shape resembles a cow’s ear—is a must-visit. In my opinion, starting from Gyeonggi Province and exiting into Seoul offers the most scenic route.
Along the way, I stopped by Seokbulam, a temple tucked into the mountainside. The path up is extremely steep, but the view and serene atmosphere make the climb worthwhile. About an hour into the hike, I stumbled upon a perfect spot for lunch.
After a long trek, nothing beats a hearty meal of 토종닭백숙 (Korean native chicken soup). I found a clean, charming café-style restaurant that served this dish along with a variety of others. As I waited for my food, I could hear chickens clucking nearby—and briefly hoped they weren’t part of my order.
