The Sierra de Andújar Natural Park encompasses mountain views, pinewoods and scrub with rough pastures. It is currently the go-to place to look for the rare but increasing Iberian Lynx, Lynx pardinus. The main area where people look is along the road JF-5004, stopping at the series of Miradores which lead from the start of the road down to the Salto del Jándula dam. Other people also see the Iberian Lynx around the Encinarejo dam, which is reached by travelling north of Andújar along the A-6177 and turning off right at the recreational area before reaching the Virgen de la Cabeza (this in itself is a nice area for viewing the surrounding countryside and seeing some birds such as Alpine Swift, Red-billed Chough, Blue Rock Thrush and raptors).

For the Lynx January-February is the best time to visit, when the animals are involved in mating activities. This is when most tour operators offer their guided tours to the area, including Birding In Spain. After that period the lynxes get much more discreet and difficult to observe. In addition to the Iberian Lynx there are other mammals of note, such as the Mouflon and Spanish Ibex, and the Eurasian Otter. Birds at that time of the year include the Spanish Imperial Eagle and the Cinereous Vulture, Hawfinch, maybe the first Great Spotted Cuckoos of the year, Iberian Green Woodpecker, Dartford...

Sierra de Andújar Natural Park mountain range is located northwest of the province of Jaen, in the middle of Sierra Morena, just one step away from the city of Andujar. It has an area of: 75,000 hectares, and contains four municipalities: Andujar, Baños de la Encina, Villanueva de la Reina, Marmolejo. It has the largest patches of Mediterranean forest on the Peninsula, dominated by holm oak and cork oak shaped like pasture and at higher altitudes. It is also crossed by several rivers and swamps. It houses species with a high degree of threat such as: the lynx, the wolf, the eagle, which have one of their last settlements in...
