CAREX Experimental Archeology Center — Attraction in Atapuerca

The Atapuerca complex (experimental site and the arqueological excavation itself) are amazing. I very much recommend them. The guide (Maria) was knowledgeable and answered all our questions. And safety first: we got helmets during the visit.

However, I have the following comments: I could not attend the full visit because workers started a strike. An informal strike, without any previous notice. After visiting the arqueological site, they closed CAREX and we could not visit it. We got half the money back, but it was quite shocking, visitors came from far away. Very nice and knowledgeable guide, apart from that you won't get to see anything really interesting as the viewing point is located quite far from the actual site where you are not allowed to enter. Other than that, the site has very little activity during the year being July and August the busiest months.

There is also and additional tour in the carex museum which I wouldn't recommend unless your have children. It's an activity designed specially for them were they could learn how our ancestors made utensils, hunted, lit fire, etc.

Tienes que ir al Centro de Arqueología Experimental (CAREX) y al yacimiento de Atapuerca. La visita es guiada y está muy bien organizada y preparada. Muy chula para ir con niñ@s también. La primera parte consta de un recorrido por diferentes escenarios donde el visitante se sumergirá en la vida del hombre de Neandertal, con diferentes escenarios, que describen y explican el modo de vida y prácticas que realizaban nuestros ancestros. El público participa de forma activa y es muy interesante (los peques lo disfrutan mucho). Dura aproximadamente una hora y media. Tras un descanso de unos 30 minutos, en el que te dejan tiempo para tomarte un refrigerio (el centro cuenta con zona de descanso y una máquina de café, por lo que se recomienda llevar tu propia comida), te llevan en autobús (trayecto de unos 12 minutos) al yacimiento de Atapuerca. En él, tras ponernos un casco de seguridad, nos adentraremos en las zonas de excavación y nos guiarán por las diferentes cuevas abiertas dónde actualmente los equipos de investigación están trabajando, y nos contarán todos los descubrimientos que han ido realizando en los terrenos, el modo de trabajar que tiene la Arqueología, y algunas pruebas de sus hallazgos, y por supuesto, con la participación activa del público. Esta segunda parte, incluyendo el traslado en autobús de ida y vuelta, dura dos horas y media aproximadamente. Es importante tener en cuenta que ambas actividades son al aire libre, por lo que hay que tener muy en cuenta la climatología para ir bien preparado, sobre todo si se va con niños.
