The Sanctuary is located in the Sierra de la Mosca, about 600 m. altitude and with magnificent views over the city.It began to be built in the 17th century dedicated to the Virgen de la Montaña, the city's patron since 1906. The Virgen de la Montaña sanctuary is a religious complex made up of three chapels. The first one was built by Francisco de Paniagua and has the appearance of a small cave of 6.50 by 2.70 meters in surface with a height of two and a half meters. This first chapel began to be built in 1621. The second chapel is the result of the enlargement of the grotto to convert it into a common hermitage and was developed by Sancho de Figueroa in the second half of the 17th century. Finally, the third chapel was built in the first half of the 18th century, expanding the second in depth, as a consequence of the increasing influx of visitors. Due to the fact that the third chapel took advantage of the walls of the second, it is unknown where the boundary was between them, although the most probable is that the second only occupied a little more than the current choir of the hermitage, as described by Ortí Belmonte in 1949.
The sanctuary complex is more extensive than the three-chapel building itself. Among other facilities, it has a small square to observe the city built in the late 17th century, an access road to the city built in the late 19th century, a temple whose history dates back to the early 18th century and a monument to the Sacred Heart...
