Upon arriving at the car park and climbing up the stairs to the entrance, I couldn't help but notice how beautiful the setting of the caves is. They are situated on the side of one of the foothills to the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range that runs along the northwest side of the island. From the entrance area, the view was very picturesque, and the entrance area itself was surrounded by pretty flowers, trees and ivy vines.
We arrived and paid the €15 entrance entrance fee, and, to my suprise, were admitted into the caves themselves immediately. At the bottom of the stairs, our tour guide was waiting, and to our suprise, not with anyone else. He told us to go down a path that led to one of the areas of the cavern. On our way there, we noticed there was a group of about 20 other tourists heading the other way. It was at that point when we assumed that we had been tacked onto the back of the ongoing tour. Therefore, after walking around the first area (which probably accounted for half of the cave's area) alone, we were greeted by our tour guide, who briefly explained the area we had just walked around before leading us to where the group of people we had passed earlier were all waiting. They had probably been waiting there for 10 minutes whilst we walked around the first section without a tour guide. This confirmed our assumption that we had been tacked onto the previous tour. However, I'd much rather have that happen than wait for possibly more than an hour for the next tour to begin once enough people had arrived. It's understandable why giving us a private tour guide just because of when we showed up wasn't viable. I wouldn't call them understaffed though, because having a tour guide for every single party is a bit ridiculous.
While feeling like we were being rushed through the first section of the caves, not being given enough time to enjoy the caves themselves sucked, the caves nevertheless get a bit samey after 15 minutes without a tour guide. And despite them replying to other reviews, saying that tours lasted 45mins to an hour, we were only in there for about 35 minutes.
Whilst the experience was rushed, cut short, and became boring without a guide, I still believe that this place deserves a positive rating of 4 stars because these things that happened to us were just to us and things would probably be more interesting if we had arrived earlier. It's just unlucky we arrived at the time we did, and as I said before, it's much better than waiting for an hour for the tour. The way they dealt with the difficult was picking the lesser of two inevitable evils and I believe that I got the best experience I could have got for the time I arrived. Well done Coves...
Read moreThe caves themselves are very interesting and accessable, the tour guide had the facts but it all felt a bit disorganised, we were split into English and German language groups but they all got mixed up and there was a lot of hanging about not really knowing what was going on. We were surprised to learn that adult charges were applied from age 13 upwards, €15 for adults €8 for children under 13. Our family of four became €53, 3 adults and 1 child. You might think I am having a moan about the cost but this the same price as Coves El Drach which are bigger, offer more of a guided tour including an underground classical music performance and cave boat trip. If these are the only caves you visit when in Mallorca then they are worth it, but if you want better value, Coves El Drach are the...
Read moreA truly fabulous place to visit. Even without the caves, this place is set on a gentle slope in a scenic area, the views are lovely and relaxing. The cafe area is beautifully presented, with really friendly staff who are only too happy to help. Now for the cave, WOW ! If I took a thousand photos it wouldn' t do this cave justice, sure, there are bigger caves in Majorca but this one feels more magical some how, with several large open chambers full of stalagmites, stalagtites and columns. Of all the caves I visited this was my favourite. A big thanks to the guide, he was very helpful. Plenty of parking is available. Please be aware that these caves are constantly damp and have wet floors, slipping on the steps and walkways is a...
